Out for a ride today and heard 'clicking' noises as I was going around a roundabout, also noticed it on right hand bends and then at the end of the ride the 'clicking' was to be heard in straight line driving.......I take it this is a sign that the drive shafts need looking at.......might be the reason that I have a black residue (grease+brake dust) on the inside of my rear wheels, checked the boots and can't find any splits!!!!!!!!!
I haven't looked at the shafts before so not sure that they can be repaired?

sounds like you have a worn cv joint.

firstly check there is no play in either joint on both shafts, if not, a temporary solution may be to peel back the rubber boots and repack with moly grease, if the wear is not too excessive, the clicking may stop for a while.

Only sure cure i am afraid is to replace them.

Martin.

I had a clicking noise the other day which I also thought was the CV joint but the noise went away after I tightened the wheel nuts. One was finger tight.
Ho hum

They were tightened to the correct torque last time they were put back on the car. I don't check them every time I use it as it should not be required.

Ok, I have been hearing some noise from the car and finally pinpoint it to the clicking noise on both the rear wheels. I jacked up the car and rotated the wheels by hand but didn't hear anything. When the car is on the ground, and I push it back and forth, I can hear the clicking noise. Is this the same noise as the worn/lack of grease on the cv joints? I checked the wheel nuts, and they are fine.

Does anyone know much it is for new cv joints? I looked at the factory parts list, but didn't see them. Thanks.

As was said earlier in this thread your best bet is to re-grease before you do anything else.

I think you'll find the CV joints are around £110 each. Try the grease first.

i once had a similar clicking noise on my Noble after I fitted new wheels... thought bugger CV gone... turned out that the new wheel weights were clipping the brake lines eek

They were clearly positioned very stupidly by the factory so definatelly worth checking clearences of things when its on its wheels.. could be a simple as an unclipped cable tie etc. Saying that I did have a CV go on my ultima, I was drag racing at the time though smile

Wow,

I'm amazed that you can hear this. What mufflers are you using?

I am using stock factory mufflers. It is hard to hear if revs are over 1500rpm. Under that, you can hear it.

Any specific grease, or will moly grease do? How much grease should I pack in there?

Do you know why there is no clicking noise when the car is lifted on the jack?

MS3 moly grease will be fine.

How much? How much is in there....I suspect it is just a guess. I would look at it and 'know' if there was enough or too much but I have no way to quantify it.

They probably don't click when jacked up because the joint is now operating at full flex which will take up any free play.
