I give you the Ultimate gearbox, as used in the Pagani Zonda and the Keonegsegg.

run either way up rated at 750 or 900Nm, has internal pump and LSD as std and comes with your choice of diff ratio. They even give a years guarentee!
It costs 15,000 Euro and for an extra 1350 Euro you can tick the Sequential option.
For all intents and puropses even the drive shaft flanges are porsche stud pattern.

I agree. These folk have a box that's rated at 900 Nm (663 lb ft) of continuous use. The stock G50 is rated at an awful lot less than that (450 lb ft if I recall correctly???). Now we can get away with shoving huge amounts of torque through our boxes because:
- we take a gamble that we've got a good box (bad ones die young in Porsches).
- we put in a known good lubricant and put in a bit more of it to get the oil at the optimal level.
- if it all goes feet up and strips its ring and pinion or otherwise chews itself to oblivion (a rare event I know). It's only £1k to get another one.
- nobody does Le Mans in an Ultima. Just the occasional long track day or sprint race. The boxes are just never run anywhere near continuously. (This is the most important point)
Practice has shown that the G50 is a very acceptable box for our cars. The price/performance is just right. However if you want the ultimate box then on paper these folk might just have something...and its certainly a more attractive option than spending the same kind of money on getting a company like Powerhaus II to extensively modify a G50 IMHO.
On a practical level it looks like it would be quite a job to get one of these hooked up. None of the pics show a bellhousing so I guess that would have to be fabricated along with the clutch and custom flywheel. None of it impossible but it would all add up.

My reply was distnictly tongue in cheek Andy, but it does have some validity.
Even with monster power outputs, under extreme load the (road) tyres will spin first, even if they hook up then the clutch (standard) will take some slippage way before you start snapping primary shafts or stripping gears.
Still, it looks like a lovely piece of kit, just 9k more than I needed to spend on a 'box.

Just to say, the G50s rating is taken 'right way up'. Inverted in the Ultima the gear cluster sits in the oil which is as it waas designed IIRC for the Le Mans cars which is the 'true' right way up!

The numbers I was using came from Powerhaus II (courtesey of Jack, Jeff and others) with the gearbox in the Ultima orientation not the Porsche.
In my opinion the main reason G50s work in higher powered cars is down to the shift in duty cycle. It's always possible that I may have got the wrong end of the stick but I refuse to believe that you can magically add 50% to the torque capacity of a box just by changing its lubrication a little. Changing the duty cycle from full race continuous to fast road/light race and accepting a shorter life can do this easily*. IMO.
Not that there's anything wrong with this approach in any way. I doubt there will ever be many 100k mile Ultimas...there are many 100k mile Porsches however.
