My GTR is sold and being picked up next Saturday by the extremely proud new owner . I've rebuilt and sold several cars including 2 DB4GT's but this is the most upset I've ever been . I've done the quickest 780 miles of my life but for me the car is too good to drive on a regular basis . The new owner will be using it much more . Anyway..............

Frank,

Perhaps, as the latest to do this, you can shed some light on something that has been seriously worrying me quietly, ever since I started my build?

Although desperate to finish it, It seems an alarmingly bigger proportion of self-build owners than I ever anticipated, actually SELL yikesweeping the fruits of their hard (and sometimes painful) labour not long after their maiden voyage - WHY?

...is there something you guys wanna tell me?

..is there something that happens once you get on the road? Do you start getting HATE MAIL readit, or maybe THREATS shoot from the loical constabulary?

..or is it something else?

I have noticed that too, and it seems that there are quite a few were the fun is in the building of the car not driving it.....
next good reason to sell is that you probably want to build another one, avoiding all the mistakes in the first build and include mods
you did not dare to do in the first attempt. And life is short, if you want to have them all you cannot keep them forever.......

I asked myself the same question. Indeed, why do people spend months, or sometimes years, building an Ultima, suffer blood, sweat and tears to get the thing finished and running and after all the joy and pain decide to sell. Mystery for me. I understand some need to build a second car even better than the first, but apart from the need for cash and perhaps other less "pleasant" (divorce, etc) reasons, I would just get out and enjoy the thing at every opportunity. Probably it is the best medicine and tons better than "an apple a day keeps the doctor away..."

Hi Keith and Spatz
There is no hidden agenda or regret . In a funny way quite the opposite . The build was a challenge but I didn't make any mistakes so the purchaser has a better car than he probrably realises .Completing the car and driving it were more thrilling than imagined it would be . Keith I havn't had hate mail or the plod on my doorstep ,or anything worse so relax and keep your goal in sight .I have been screamed at by cars full of hysterical girls which is something I would not have believed and have only seen on the Tely .I'm addicted to building things , not just cars. I have made 4 weight driven Victorian design floor standing Astonomical Regulator Clocks , the best of which keeps time to within +/- 1.25 seconds/month . I contacted the BHI two of whose members came to see the clock as they said it was virtualy immpossible even with years of apprentiship [they are for sale now !!].I got my inspiration after watching the documentary about Harrison and the search for Longitude .I took 12 months thinking about how to make all the parts before I dare start and the 12 months to make the first clock . For all contemplating an Ultima build I have not discovered anything that would put me off , but on the other hand I am a particularly stuborn and obsessive personality driven by the search for that impossible perfection and you will need a certain degree of the first 2 characteristics of commitment to get you through your build .

WHY DID I SELL THE CAR ? I don't realy know is the honest answer but a lot of money tied up , for me . On a 58 plate probrably subject to monetary deprieciation for a couple of years and also I never seem to drive it . On the other hand I will miss it terribly. I will now have the space to start a new affair.

Rest assured guys this is not an Ultima thing it happens right across the kitcar spectrum and maybe also into classics.
Some people just love to build and when completed can't wait to start the next project which often has to be funded by the sale of the newly completed car. It is very common to see cars for sale with 300 miles on the clock.

Frank, Congrats on the sale.
She was a real beauty, i dont doubt for a second though that there will be a new one in the pipeline soon. The new owner really did get a bargain.

I couldn't agree more with Frank's summary. I too just sold my GTR and the buyer got a great car that I will miss a lot. The GTR is an amazingly high performance car. I would bet there aren't too many GTR owners that really extract everything out of the car that it can deliver. I certainly didn't. In fact, if there is a reason I sold it, it is that it is too much car for me. You just won't understand how scary unless you sit behind the wheel of a 500+ HP GTR. Absolutely amazing experience. And then you have to factor in Richard and Ted. They were always very helpful even after the sale. If you want to go fast, you're at the right place.

Hi gaz, when are you going to build another GTR?

I'm just approaching the 11th anniversary of ordering my Sport, which metamorphosed (?) into a GTR during the build. It's been on the road for nearly 9.5 years now. After my incident last year the insurers offered me a fair price as a write off but I decided to have it repaired, I couldn't bear the thought of it being broken up!

Sorry to pinch your record Mike but next month will be the 15th anniversary of ordering my Sport. I took my time building it and eventually got it on the road in September 1999. I still love driving it and it's only ever let me down once (my fault for not assembling the clutch pivot mechanism properly) and even then, it was decent enough to wait until I was just 3 miles from home after a 260 mile round trip to Stoneleigh.

I bought my chassis in Nov 97, car went for/passed one of the first Ultima SVA's April 1999 - So 10.5 years on the road , 25,000 miles (which is a long was in a spyder with our weather!) been to Lemans 6 times in it, track days, drag races and general "being a silly billy". Great car. Will NEVER sell it because....
a)My son built it with me and that's special, b) What could you replace it with? c) Nothing comes close to the performance-looks-comments etc. d) See b again.

Dang, 1.25/month is quite an accomplishment for a free-running clock. I have an atomic clock on the wall that keeps time thorough a pulse that comes out of Colorado. It is always accurate to a 1/1000 of a second, and the hands even spin on daylight savings. Now I feel like I'm cheating smile
