Some questions about GTR
Discussion
Hello,
I currently have a TVR Tuscan S, which I'm looking to replace early next year.
I'm either going to get another TVR or an Ultima.
I have some questions about the GTR:
a) I have seen the Autocar 0-100-0 test, they tested the very similar Can-Am. This was 500bhp as opposed to 534bhp you can have with the GTR. The 0-100 mph time was 7.47 seconds, any idea what the GTR with 6.3 litre engine would post?
b) Autocar test again, the braking time for the Can Am from 100 was 5.50 seconds, which was quite long, the Pagani Zonda (250kg heavier) stopped in 4.05 seconds. Granted it has ABS, but the main difference would be that the Zonda (the Lamborghini Murcielago as well which was tested) has 355mm brake disks front and rear, whilst the Can Am had 315mm brake disks. Are better brakes available with the GTR? I'm not looking for ABS.
c) Warranty: I believe the Chevy based 6.3 litre engine is made by American Speed. I read somewhere that outside of the US there is no warranty with this engine. Is that true? If not, would Ultima Sports Ltd provide me with the engine warranty?
d) Traction control: has anyone tried any of the Ultima cars with the Racelogic (<a href="http://www.racelogic.co.uk">www.racelogic.co.uk</a>
traction control? How did it fare, and would Ultima Sports build me a car with this in it from the beginning.
e) Since you cannot wind down the windows, how effective is the optional air con on a hot day?
f) Lastly, how much does a fully built and SVAed GTR cost from Ultima Sports? Give or take a couple of £grand. I have e-mailed tedmarlow@ultimasports.co.uk but I have not got a reply.
Thanks for your time!

Hello,

Good choice. Having had both (not a Tuscan though) you'll not be disappointed although the interior is a bit more spartan. No reason you can't mod it completely with leather and other bits. See UltimaSimon's bling-mobile for an example
I have some questions about the GTR:

You can spec the GTR with various engines, at varying levels of tune. Haven't done any 0-100's yet, but I've got 629hp (US) with a Supercharged 6.3l SB Chevy. I'd say it would comfortable breeze past any TVR (Typhon & Sagaris included)
b) Autocar test again, the braking time for the Can Am from 100 was 5.50 seconds, which was quite long, the Pagani Zonda (250kg heavier) stopped in 4.05 seconds. Granted it has ABS, but the main difference would be that the Zonda (the Lamborghini Murcielago as well which was tested) has 355mm brake disks front and rear, whilst the Can Am had 315mm brake disks. Andys car (the one tested) does not run the factory braking setup. He uses group 4 Toyota rally calipers or something IIRC. Whilst I can't provide comparitive test figures, the AP factory setup with decent compound pads has monstrous braking potential.
c) Warranty: I believe the Chevy based 6.3 litre engine is made by American Speed. I read somewhere that outside of the US there is no warranty with this engine. Is that true? If not, would Ultima Sports Ltd provide me with the engine warranty?
Bit of a grey area, but AS have fantastic customer service regardless. If something does go wrong, they're VERY quick to sort it out. Don't know what the factory standpoint is regarding engine warranty? Either way, it's a lot cheaper to maintain and fix than a Speed Six!
d) Traction control: has anyone tried any of the Ultima cars with the Racelogic traction control? How did it fare, and would Ultima Sports build me a car with this in it from the beginning.
Bluesatin (Guy) has a Racelogic setup in his car. I'm not a fan of TRC, but it's SO easy to light up the rears I haven't ruled it our completely. It can be retrofitted, but obviously it's easier to wang it in during the build. I'd say that the factory would fit almost anything (within reason)... but for a price
e) Since you cannot wind down the windows, how effective is the optional air con on a hot day?
Well, I found insulating the engine bay and driver cell to be very effective. I went to Le Mans last year and didn't use the aircon at all - despite 80-90 degree temps! Aircon is very good.
f) Lastly, how much does a fully built and SVAed GTR cost from Ultima Sports? Give or take a couple of £grand. I have e-mailed tedmarlow@ultimasports.co.uk but I have not got a reply.
It's best to give Ted a ring as you can imagine how many dreamers he gets emailing him asking 'how much' and to a certain extend, it's a question of how much so you want to spend. The spec. of the car can alter the price a fair bit. But for a standard car, I'd reckon on 60k+
Thanks for your time!
No worries.

Andy only had one run at the 0-100-0. I believe, when pressed, he admits to having had his brake bias incorrectly set for the run and was locking up the front or rears.
Take a test ride with Ted, then come back and report if you can find any fault with the brakes.

Hello Steve,
Ted has offered me a test drive which I'll take him up on later this year.
How does insurance compare to say TVR cars for people who have had both?
Was paying £950 for my Tuscan S last year, went up to £1800 when the renewal came up! I've never made a claim or had an accident but too many (footballers?) have. Managed to get a price of £1200 per year from A Mannings.

Insurance depends on how old you are and where you live (obviously) but I think the vast majority of Ultima owners have their insurance coming in under or wost case around £1k. If you are under 30 and have little experience of expensive/sports cars then comprehensive insurance will be hard work...if you can insure it, it will be quite affordable.
