I've heard on the grapevine that someone is using an Audi transaxle in the Ultima and if there is any info I'd be very grateful to hear.

Should explain - it's not for the Sports (G50/52 fitted) but for my brother's highly modified Lotus Esprit V8. [With a race ECU, re-circ dump valves, water injection and variable boost, the thing is putting out 420BHP and loads of torque]

Trouble is, the Renault (yes, remember the R25 of years ago and Citroen Maserati) transaxle is not up to the job and he's expecting the next flat out run up Kesselshen at the Nurburgring will snap the very long and fragile input shaft as it whips between bearings. Lotus themselves know about this and restrict torque through the ECU to 1st and 2nd gears.

Looking at Transaxle upgrades the Porsche box results in too much modification and very strange driveshaft angles and has been discounted. He cannot afford a Hewland box and heard the Audi might be an alternative.

Anyone done this to an Ultima?

Cheers,

Dave.

Think they also use the Audi box in a Porsche, think it is in the 2.5 boxster, think it is a 5 speed and the 6 speed Getrag is used in the 3.2, but could be wrong. Do not think it takes so much power as the Getrag.

There was a 5 speed in a Porsche 2.5 boxster for sale about a month ago could still be available. Let me know if you our intrested.

Chris

He could always do what I did. Get a stronger input shaft made up. The original did a very good impression of spaghetti when I first put the car together. The uprated one managed to handle all the torque I could throw at it without any complaints.

The Albins AGB 10 may well be an option. Prices are pretty good too at the mo due to the weakening Aussie dollar. Close-ish fit to the Porsche box so may not work for you though.
