Hi, im looking to start a new build Ultima GTR this year. Firstly im not mechnaically minded nor have i done anything like this before, So any advice appreciated.

Im a little concerned at engine choice. I have been looking at various options and thought the Chevy LS7 was the best option-however ive noticed that it doesnt pass emissions tests in some countries. The last thing i want to do is start to build a car and in the end cant even drive it on the road... so my question is what engine should i consider without losing BHP?

The LS7 could even be registered in France...
So I wonder which countries do not allow it on the road.

Chris
From your profile you are UK based so why would you worry about other countries?

If, as you say, you are not mechanically minded you should only be considering an engine/'box combo that is supplied by and fully supported by the Factory. Anything else will require high levels of mechanical knowledge and research to achieve.

Fortunately it pass !
It is my choice for mine.
High specs LS7 from AS (factory supported as recommended by steve) pass in all versions, with 565, 650 or 700 HP (but it seems not in France for this last one budala).

I think the poster may be referring to the High powered A/S LS7 engines, it does say that the 700hp and the 800 hp LS7's are/may not be emission legal in some states/countries

I will not even try to register the Ultima in France !

Fortunately it's allready UK registered and belongs to my brother in law ... who lives in Colchester.
And he lends it to me ... biggrin

Chris: Steve D is right on the money. If you are not mechanicaly inclined don't let that stop you from building a car. The caveat is keep it as simple as possible. Order a fully speced kit from the facctory, ask them about doing the basic sheet metal work on the tub for you. then acquire a drop in engine and tranaxel. It will all work. I am sure that all the builders here will tell you a version of the same story. The only time I had trouble with the build was when I parted from the factories plans or thought I knew better. Lee

thanks for the replies. I have just seen the note on some of the LS7 engines 'Will not pass emissions in some states and countries'. My concern is that will change to all countries by the time the car is built (due to increased pressure on environmental issues)?

I would most likely stick to all standard factory parts and recommeded engine choices as im not mechanically minded/knowelegebale in that area. However, I do plan on building the car myself firstly for the enjoyment (hopefully lol) and being able to purchase parts as i build is a bonus.

I know and have seen the same questions before. But if i were to start a fresh build doing it myself buying all factory parts what sort of ball park figure should i be looking at spending?

The LS7 700bhp from american speed seems the best value or something like a 383 c.i. 640 hp be better option. Perhaps im looking at wrong type of engines.? I thought LS7 was more modern and reliable so worth the additional cost? (10,000$ difference?)

I have looked to see the cost of a G50 gearbox but cant seem to find anywhere that sells it.

Sorry if im asking too many 'newbie' questions.

I know it budala ! As I read regularly your (multi-)cars story in another forum .... (et 119 pages ca commence à faire long!!!)
I will not register mine in France (especialy with the 700HP LS7 from AS), but as I had no brother in law in UK, I've choosed another legal solution!

I think that we have a close project because I plan to buy a turnkey ultima (because impossible to build it myself) but thought for a long time about the choice of the spécifications.
The LS7 is according to me the best solution. Including face to evolutions of the regulations.
You can find G50 gearbox at less than 2K.

where have seen a g50 box that cheap, ive been looking on ebay, pistonheads etc for months and not once seen anything usable for a ultima.

When are you looking to start your build?
How much money do you reckon would be a good starting point to build the gtr?

You are correct that the LS engine is the modern version and the ideal choice to produce a refined and reliable engine. It is also best placed to deal with the emissions regulations.

But....Once again the issue of engine size.
Why do you feel the need for such a powerful engine? Apart from the bragging rights that is about twice the size of engine you are going to need unless your goal in life is to set all new records where ever you go.

Coming back to your concern about the regulations when you have finished your build.
Once you have made the choice between small block Chevy and LS you do not need to choose the final engine size until you have almost completed your build as fitting the engine is pretty much the last job to do.

G50 'boxes are available from the Factory.

As you are at the early stages may I suggest you fill in your profile with roughly where you live then someone local may be able to show you their car and guide you some more. There is the risk that the 720 Factory demonstrator gives people the impression that they need the same in order to achieve that 'Test Fright' feeling. This is wrong as 400hp can easily do the same.

So the LS7 seems to be the engine of choice for people like myself. The main reason i have considered the 700bhp LS7 is due to the price difference between the other LS7 engines
ls7 565bhp 25.9$
ls7 650bhp 26.9$
ls7 700bhp 28.9$

the 700bhp engine seems to be the best value to me?
How much is the G50 box from the factory?

To be honest ive only ever sat in an ultima at stoneleigh kit car show this year. Ive yet to hear one let alone be inside whilst it is moving.

Then it's time you got yourself over to the Factory and have a 'Test Fright'.
Ask to go out with Ted in the lowest power car they have. I can almost guarantee he will pin you to your seat and leave you well impressed.

hi noticed lately theres been a fair few threads about alt engines, has any one ever concidered a porsche engine ( yes i know the gear box has still got to be inverted ) but at least if your getting a high power engine with its own gear box you know their specked together as i said just a thought/ question idea
