To drill or not to drill

May seem a dumb question but I have yet to decide on transmission yet with the choice between R/H G50 52 or centre Getrag G96.90

The question is:

Do I drill the holes in the alloy panel for the R/H change before I fix it in place?

The centre change holes can be drilled at a later date but the holes for the rose joints for the R/H change would be difficult to do without damaging the threads on the captive nuts.

What have others done?

PS All alloy panels will be covered in carpet so will not be seen.

If you mean the holes for the rose joints then as you say, you will damage the threads if you do it when the panel is fixed but if you are covering with carpet, then you may as well cut the holes anyway. Wait till panel is cut accurately, you can skin-pin it and then mark the holes from the other side.

If, on the other hand, you mean the holes for the horizontal gear rod through both skins of the engine bulkhead, then the way to do this is, after you have put the lower rose joint in, you can shine a laser through that rose joint and the one in the engine bay. Then, pin the panels in position and mark the spots. Pics of this technique on my build site - Note that I probably stole the laser idea from someone else
