Windshield DOT spec

Can any of you guys tell me what the DOT approval number is on the windshield of a Mk4?

It's written on the windshield (probably one of the bottom corners).

I need to know it for importing my car to the US, but of course it's in a warehouse in California, so @I can't just go an look Oh, and the guy who needs to know is in Detroit, so he can't go and look either

Steve, that does help us out (and by us I mean James and myself). Those are the exact codes we need, but we need them from a Sports, as we're not sure that they're the same on the GTR.

Err, I was supposed to ask about the side windows as well...any chance anyone has a marking on their side windows that starts AS2? Sorry...

There will be no marking on the side windows because they are Perspex (Polycarbonate).

That's what I was afraid of...I think that means DOT is going to "take" them.

My mistake. Perspex is "special". It doesn't have markings, and while the forumation has specs it has to meet, it sounds like DOT's got no way to examine them, basically, so when I told the DOT guy what they were, he replied "We'll, we won't worry about those".

Side windows or windscreen?

Both are custom made over unique and expensive tooling. That is why they are expensive. You could make some tooling yourself for the side windows but there is no alternative for the windscreen.

You do realise a screen for a bog standard tin top can be as much as that without it being anywhere near as curved.

£400 is a stupid amount of money, no way do they cost this, sombody is just taking the .... (

(Yes I know they always tell you it's £££ but if you look at what the insurance companies actually pay for screens you would get the picture).

Ted told me the screens are made from tooling designed for, and payed for, by Ultima.

From the expression on his face to tooling was not cheap.
