Hi Steve

Tell us a bit more about your setup! Engine, Transmission, clutch, flywheel etc

My Ultima supplied setup was incorrect and I went though 2 starter gears before I measured it and found the wrong offset and the completely wrong starter.... Spoke to Kennedy Engineering and they told me I had a 8 tooth starter and it should be a 9....
They supplied new starter and after changing to a new 911 Ring gear it was all fine.....

So has there been some failures of the Metro ring gear from GD ???

Fo those of us who have non std setups - this prompts me to ask if anyone could tell me what the right setup should be.

For an LS7 how may ring-gear teeth vs starter teeth? Or is there a different formula?

Any Gurus on this? Would help some of us avoid the chewing in advance?

cheers

My LS7 setup uses factory supplied flywheel clutch, ring gear, starter motor,KEP plate and G5003 gear box.
The bolts that hold the clutch were too long, but the factory is aware of this issue, so should not happen again. The thrust bearing tube needs to be a smaller diameter that what I found on my gear box which was 34mm and needed to be 32mm (bought it from the porsche dealer).
Other than that it was bolt on not creating any problems so far......

Mine too. Works just fine.

That's odd, mine were too long when I built mine in 2001 and they were aware of it then. It seems it did happen again wink

They were also aware of that then, didn't stop them supplying me with a gearbox with the 34mm bearing tube.

Whilst the overall product is great, one of the factories biggest shortfalls seems to be keeping track of issues / changes.

I also had problems with my a/c compressor mount due to small changes to the chassis design.

There seem to be a few little factory "known issues" which I don't think are effectively shared with builders / owners. These things should either be in the build manual, or their internal QA should fix / check the issues.

IMO perhaps an ISO type certification by the Factory would help keep mandatory track and documentation of modifs and changes. Could also be a good marketing and sales argument too.

startergears v flywheel gearing is a commom problem even with standard chevy and ford V8's as there are so many variants and applications.

Realsteel do a small explaination in their catalogue which even if you are 100% sure which gears to use there is a backlash check you can perform..

Ill have a look later, but off to Oulton Park for the afternoon to watch some porker looneys having a play.... First run out in the Ultima as well today after breaking my leg... dont think I will be driving it alot, but eager passenger is waiting just in case...

hi
I have a question and as I did not bolt my engine to the gearbox I cant tell you about an Ultima application but a chevy one...

My ultima has 2 places to put a starter motor, one faces forwards(recon thats the porsche starter place) the other would face backwards on the plate. If the ultima application uses a chevy starter(does it?) i know there are 2 different types of starter one has metric 10mm bolts that hold it on,the other doesnt..

Also when fitting a starter motor to a chevy engine you HAVE to shim the starter motor to get the correct teeth mesh.... this has to be done on all chevy starter/chevy engines..

please take a look at http://www.realsteel.co.uk/section3b.pdf page S3/39

Oviously this might be out of date for our applications but when building hotrods with old 350 motors we used to have to do it..

could be a help, but certainly worth asking just in case..

maybe we can open a stickie, where we can put down all the information that cannot be found in the manual. It would be very helpful not to post anyhting off topic there with some moderator help.
