I am getting close to sorting out most of the engine bay bits, but now have a new challenge!

The alternator is fouling the dry-sump oil tank. Even though this tank is as far forward on the LHS as possible the alternatotr makes it imposs to fit.
So can I find a shorted altewrnator belt and thus pull the alternator in by an inch?

Anyone know where I can get this belt in the UK

Cheers

Lots of UK suppliers via google or Summit supply them at 25mm increments, they are still open now!

I assume the belt is just your standard multi v design so just take it into Halfords and go along the rack until you find the size you want.

Steve,

Don't think its a V belt, the inside looks like a 'diamond' pattern tyre tread!

The existing belt is 20mm wide and has marked in it - 6PK1420 - which I presume indicates the original length?
However after using a length of masking tape I measure 1435mm - so maybe this is the stretched length.

I need to find on around 50mm shorter, thus this should move the alternator about an inch closer to the engine....

I must be getting old but I have scanned google for over an hr, but can't seem to find anyone that seems to have a range suitable.

Who do you use?

cheers

Keith

smile Steve you are a wonder!

Thanks so much for preventing total hair-loss!

One little questionette - do you think one inch clearance between the oil tank and alternator is about right? I have no idea how much the engine will rock under load etc?

cheers

If you go to any motor factor they will supply you with a belt to the length you want. What I usually do is cut a longer belt and mark the overlap when in place. You can then get an exact measurement. I've always managed to get belts within 2 or 3mm.

I doubt the engine moves more than about 10mm.

If you want to be really flash then how about active engine mounts that stiffen when you are on the gas.

Yesterday managed to get a shorter version from my local factors(well- theres a thing!) - fitted a treat - alternator fits nicely now!

On to the next head-scratching issue on how to run the -12 oil pipes from the LHS dry sump tank to the RHS inlet and outlet on the engine. Want to make it neat and avoid stress on the engine rocking so wondered if would be better to run around the front of the engine clipped to the frame or to the engine itelf using the sump bolts. Those hoses are so huge it is not so easy to mount neatly.

any experiences or advice?

cheers
