Gearbox Breather
Discussion
As the box heats and cools so does the oil/air inside it, hence a breather is required to save seals and gaskets. Since the hot, expanded air will contain some oil vapour you can either spit it out the breather and accept losing a little or use a catch/breather tank. If you position the breather hose to the bottom of this tank and locate the tank higher than the g/box breather point, any gear oil that builds up in there can run back down into the box and help maintain the level when all is stationary and starts to cool .

I would just use the existing one and reposition. It does not matter how long the pipes are.
Does yours have the vent running of the top of the 'box or from a plate down the side?
If the latter then life is easier because the new tank position does not need to be as high. It only needs to be above to outlet.
