clutch weight question?
Discussion
Hi all, its a matter iv seen mentioned on here before the issue of the weight of the clutch ? the reason i ask is i had a chance to drive my mates 911 speedster its left hand drive with a G50 gearbox so it gave me a chance to compair clutch feel along with right hand shift action , now i must say the gear leaver feels a lot more precise ( riffle bolt like ) in the ultima then the 911
but the clutch ( all though not modern hatchback light )is still noticable lighter then the ultima and there both hydraulic systems any one know why
its not a major problem as i find it no heavier then my old works landrover ( just being sort of nosey really ) but my other half found it near imposible to controll smoothly ,

its not a major problem as i find it no heavier then my old works landrover ( just being sort of nosey really ) but my other half found it near imposible to controll smoothly , It is possible to use a different master cylinder which reduces the clutch effort but at the same time reduces travel. Some who have tried the conversion found that they could not deal with the travel issue either having the clutch slip, or not clear, at the ends of the motion.
The difference from the Ultima to the Porsche is more likely pedal leverage rather than hydraulics.
I've not tried it but you may be able to change the pivot point of the pedal and achieve results.

I did loads of research to get my clutch lighter and basically the only way is a longer pedal travel... this can be done by a different clutch cylinder or by moving the pivot point on the pedal.
I moved the pivot on the pedal and it did work well... but then I had an even heavier clutch (4 speed) and it did make the pedal throw very long for the room available in an Ultima.

I had the different cylinder and there is a huge difference in pedal lightness. I was using a 5/8 cylinder with the triple plate clutch. Unfortunately when i went to the LS, my ring gear sat on the other side of the clutch which meant I had to swap to the standard single plate clutch.
The 5/8 cylinder just didnt have enough travel for the single plate.
From listening to some 'experts'i understand the triple plate also makes things a bit lighter. HA which brings me on to....... if anyone wants a reasonbly priced triple plate clutch pm me.

it seems that we sorted out my clutch problems, the factory master cylinder was defective and while installing another one we did exchange the shaft for a longer one, have not driven the car myself yet but the guy who is bringing it through the registration process told me the clutch now works well with a good pressure point and proper desengaging.
Now waiting.......................wish me luck.

What about servo assistance? I notice several have done this, and I think Robs car had one and the clutch weight/feel was very acceptable.
Anyone had negative experiences using these?
cheers

Yep, I got one (servo on clutch) but only as I'm a puny kinda guy Anyone had negative experiences using these?
cheers
keith

Works well though.
