Hey guys,

I was just reading up on transmission choices, when I thought to myself: if these Tesla people can build an elise with an e-engine, why can't you do the same with an Ultima?
It should be possible to install a flat pack of batteries on the entire floor
of the car and a strong electro engine in the back and maybe 2 smaller ones in the front.
Has anybody tried anything like that or is it just a stupid idea?

I thought about a diesel engine, aswell, but (apart from the torque) it would take everything away, I like about the Ultima design.
The light-weight, the LS7 engine sound, and the possibility to find a gearbox, that will actually survive a few 1000km.

All of that would be gone with a huge diesel engine.

Besides, I already drive a 4.2TDI in my A8L. So, there is now point for me to get another big diesel engine.

Ive been thinking of a VW touareg diesel for ages.

2 turbos 600-800 hp but the torque IS the problem.

Small manufactures/teams are not building diesel lemans cars because of the torque. The gearboxes just cant take it and its only development and massive costs that can be swallowed by the likes of Audi and Peugeot.

Id love a disel ultima(admittedly Id have a massive sterio playing V8 sounds) but the thought of my supercar doing 35mpg down the motorways and not having a noise issue at track days out ways alot of the cons. Dont forget alot of every day drivers are quicker in diesel format the petrol.Golf GTi is a good example.

So lets see how long my AS engine lasts before I look seriously again at a big german twin turbo diesel, even if it is a Audi A8 disel or Bmw 340d.

Can't understand why anyone would want a diesel or electric Ultima. What is the obsession with torque in such a light car??!

Buy why, though? It's because they are the best given the rules of the game.

Similarly, why do you want a diesel engine in your Ultima? Fuel economy? Don't make me laugh. That's a 'practical' consideration. Same goes for electric. The driving experience will not be as good as a petrol engine.

Anything that isn't petrol powered is a compromise due to rules imposed by other people be they sport rules or tax rules.
