ECUs AS and Ultima
Discussion
Hey guys,
I'm trying to learn more about the ECUs, used in the car, when installing a LS7 engine.
From the wiring diagrams, that I've seen, it doesn't really look like the Ultima itself has one central ECU. I'm planning to install and program an ECU myself, possibly with CAN or Profi-Bus, so I'll be doing a lot of custom wiring without the wiring loom anyways.
What do you guys know about American Speed's ECU? Can the ECU be altered? What bus-system does it work with? Can a different ECU be used, while keeping the programming for the engine?
Has anybody used different ECUs for the car or the engine?

I use a Motec 800 on a LS1, very high quality, exspensive and more technology then you need on a street car. That said you sound as if you get the electron thing. The Motec will provide you the room to play with sensors, traction control, launch control, ect until your hearts content. All that might be your niche in Ultima community. Jump in the waters fine. Hallo Andi,
apart from the engine ECU there are no electronic devices in a standard Ultima (ok, maybe the indicator).
As I know AS use the standard GM ECU (E38), which is also used with my Jeff Schwartz LS7.
Using an other ECU makes it more difficult to legalize the car I think.
The GM ECU uses the CAN Bus and can be reprogramed.

i have a dta s80 ecu in my ls7 engine based ultima and there is a good map
from dta for my engine setup. it was created with my engine from my engine supplier on a professional dyno and worked flawlessly from day one. i have later added innovate lambda sensors and expanded the ecu programming so i can actually use a flip switch on the dash to engage lambda control with fuel correction or use the original map without fuel correction to lambda 1. the dta ecu software can be downloaded for free. i can provide you my map with the lambda controls if you like to have a look at.
the dyno sheed of my engine with dta ecu can be found here
