I have now discovered what is (apparently)the most appropriate oil for my G96-50 with Limited Slip!
..and since I have used Mobil 1 5w30 for my engine (designed for cats???) I wanted to use the same make (I know! - silly!)

Having gone around many of the motor factors/halfords in Cheltenham etc it seems that LS 75/90 is purely a rumour... I know it exists, but even the motor-factors rining around can't find any, or even another make with an exact equiv. All they say is, go to a Porsche dealer! Hrummph!

If they think I am going to travel 40 miles to the nearest, only to be ripped of with porsche prices...Nahhh!

Iunderstand it has to be LS... plenty of non-LS varieties, and even some LS but 80/90 grade........

Then in desperation, I started googling...but...really weird...some reference to it, but no listings with to most obvious candidate suppliers...

What the hell????? Looks like I am going to have to spend hours on the phone then!

Please can someone tell me where I can get this elixer, but at reasonable prices? I need 4-5 litres apparently to fill my box!

Can't believe how difficult it is to get gearbox oil!

Hi, literally joined the forum a couple of minutes ago to reply to this, but have been lurking for a long time.
I have loved the ultima since my high school days having been obsessed with kit cars and thumbing through many copies of Which Kit? magazine. I would drool over pics of the Ultima(favourite) closely followed by the sadly missing GT Developments GT40.
Anyway in reply to your post, Millers Oils are good for specialised oils. I'm not connected with them in any way, but they do produce some great quality oils.

For some reason they seem to be just off the radar when people are looking for oils. Billion dollar advertising budgets I suppose.

Well Opie get my vote...so far... Ordered 5 litres tues, got a phone call to confirm, then Wednesday came and got another call from Opie to advise me it was coming that day and was I happy!....Now that is service, and it arrived as promised!

So different from the rubbish service you get mostly these days from big companies..and they seemed to genuinely care!

Anyhow..got to filling my box last night...1 - 2- 3 litres went in...then 4, then 5 and ...OH! no-where near the recommended line!
(which has been hand drawn in black felt-tip presumably by CFM????) In normal use it appears the capacity is 4.something litres or there-about..but I gues being inverted and all....

JIMINY! ...how many litres of this liquid platinum will it take? - looks like its going to cost more than my mortguage!

Hi Keith

Your box only requires 4 litres as recommended by California Motorsports and the oil of choice is Mobil 1 as in the pic below. It was also recommended by porsche racing. I have the same G96-50 in my Can-Am. If you put too much oil in it will throw it out of the breather.

Now I am getting worried!

I have added 5 litres as said, and there is a BLACK line inked on the side saying 'Level'! I have no idea if that was CFM or JS who put it there.

With 5 litres in the box, I used a bent wire to measure the level slipped into the side filler after marking the level on it in relation to the outside line vs the filler hole...and the current oil level is around 2 inches below the prescribed ink/line/mark.

So either I have a strange derrivative of the G96-50 (twin turbo 4wd/converted) box, or someone has screwed up and misled me putting the ink line on the outside of the box. The box is level btw....

The CFM site does indeed say 3.8 litres of oil, however I do wonder if this is for a normal orientated box, and maybe needs more for inverted usage..

Guys, I am totally awash here and need to urgently find out before the suppliers send me more very expensive oil!

HELP!

cheers

does your box have external oil pump? and were is your line drawn?
Must say I thought the rule with the G50's was put 1litre more oil in when inverting and it usually take 2.5litres? as the G96 that you have is essentially a large diff G50 internals in a getrag case im guessing the rule is the same hence 3.8litres recomended.

I know with my old box I couldnt check the oil level just had to make sure i put the correct amount in and had to drain it if i wanted to check!

Hi Andy,

No it does not - no externals!

The real mistery is how that line got there! ..and with the words 'Level' so it was intentional...and before you ask, no the writing was not upside down! It was meant to be read with the box inverted.

The box originated from CMS via Jeff Schwartz, and had a lot of work done on it apparently, so I can't see CMS leaving such an obvious line on the side of what is effectively a brand new box...then again what on earth was the line for in the first place, if not to indicate the level??????

...unless it was a stupid practical joke!

I have shot off an email to CMS hoping they can shed some light, but a reply will probably take time!

I am totaly bemused! ...with 5 damn litres of liquid platinum in the box!

cheers

scratchchin could it be a box with an opening to a black hole?
At least you can later drain the 5lt of "platinum" and save some for a future oil change

can you keep us posted on what you find out. I thought that the box in question had a sump cast into the housing that runs allong side the crown wheel, this is where the internal oil pump would normally draw its oil from - or at least what i can make out of it from the porsche drawings i have seen. i dont know how the oiling system in this box would work once inverted as the sump and pick up would now be at the top.

This is my box...no sump I can see!

Big Beasty ain't it! - Mine has had modified gears put in so here is the spec:

New 3rd-6th gear synchros were upgraded to steel ones
-New Custom 3.15 tall 1st gear
-New Custom 2.00 tall 2nd gear
-New Kaaz 1.5 way locking LSD set to 45/90%
-Inverted (with -3AN breather?)

Note the second shot and you can clearly see the filler plug back a bit from the trans/shaft area.
The black 'filler' line I was talking about was drawn across the second rows of 'squares' above this hole (below if it is inverted!)

cheers

Why are you worried! I've told you the answer. I didn't spend nearly £8,000 on a box without knowing what oil and how much I was going to put in it! I've done over 2,000 miles with my G96-50 and it works just fine. Stop worrying Keith!
