Fuel pumps

Hi,
Been installing the pumps, brackets etc today.
I noticed in the instuctions on the Carter pumps that I am not to use PTFE tape or paste on the male connections.
Are the fittings that the factory supply dry seal?

Being a plumber by trade I find that a bit odd.

As a plumber you know how to use PTFE tape. But as you know it is all to easy to do it wrong and end up with the stuff everywhere. The fittings and (I think)the pump body are ali so will bed in much better than the brass or iron you would normaly use.

I my expereance if you screw 2 ally treads together dry then they always seem to bind and pickup so if you ever need to get them apart there nackered. So have used PTFE tape on all the NPT threads. Just as you say make sure you don't put to much on, and get it into the system.

I never use the tape, much ratiher use the ptfe sealant in a tube and in small amounts. I doubt that it would seal otherwise.

I buy PTFE in boxes of 200 so I do know how to use it properly.
Just thought there might be some obscure reason why Carter's say don't.

PTFE - Professional Tape for Engineers?

I think that Carter are worried about bits of PTFE tape getting ingested into the pump mechanism. It can be such gooey stretchy stuff that you can see how it would gum up a pump good and proper.

It shouldn't be necessary to use PTFE tape with the brass fuel pipe nipples that Carter supply but it will be different with NPTF to JIC adapters. I was worried about the situation that Clive outlined so put a very small ammount of tape round the joints in such a way as to minimise the possibility of bits ending up in the pump.
