Paint/ Wrap Ideas Please
Discussion
So...
The engine bay is all but complete (
Hooray!)
Since I have built an Ally Firewall, I don't have the cab on yet, intending to slide the cab firewall in between the frame and the ally firewall (which will be interesting!)... and so...
My next dilemma is... since the body is in a luvvly shade of grey gelcoat
, I have to think about the right sequence of painting/fitting...and so to the dilemma...
The problem is that the rear part of the cab is not painted, and would be rather difficult (I would have thought?) to spray or wrap in-situ to match the rest of the body-work resulting in a naff job!
and so probably the best idea woul be to have the cab done before the rest of the body and before fitting, but two issues:
1. If painted, how can I be sure of an exact match when I get the other body parts done, say 3-6 months later?
2. If wrapped, I would have thought that this would be very difficult to do where the rear wall is a sharp bend with compound curves.
Another idea I presume would be to choose a totally different colour for the rear of the firewall (the inner part leaving a defined line around the back edge for the expected later paint or wrap overlap) like black, intending that when the whole car is painted or wrapped, the paint color difference inside the clip area would look to be done as complimentary and professional? But then do I do the firewall myself or hand it over to a body-shop?
And then...who do I use for the painting? I have seen such poor jobs done locally, and the thought of handing over my pride to a dumkoff is giving me sleepless nights.
so...over to you... thoughts please!

How-do Paul!
Yeah absolutely, that is certainly one option, and would solve the problem in one swoop. You know how sometimes you are so close to the problem you can't see the wood for the trees!
I do wonder though if wrap for the car is a non-starter realistically for the main body, simply because of the need to go around tight material-reducing corners such as the rt-angle lip of the rear part of the cab. OK so a join could be used, but I would always be worried about gapping or peeling at that point.
I think most here use paint (if not gelcoat) however the idea of a full carbon weave wrap that was offered to me recently does have a certain appeal!
In terms of paint, does any specialists here recommend the best type for our GRP bodies? ..and ones to avoid?
cheers

I think a wrap is the way to go. I have seen them wrap a Lambo at the Autosport show (PH area) and tight bends are not an issue. The amount of prep work needed to get a really good finish with paint can make it very expensive.
Try and contact the guy with the matt black car on here. He had that wrapped. (It is in the gallery)
ETA It is Mr Snood's car. See latest post on the video thread.

I would highly recommend Creative FX. They are a sponsor of my race team and Sean the owner, is a complete petrol header. He wraped the front and of my Ult with 3M protective tape and is a good egg.
He's in Kent.
Tell him he comes recommended:
