Rear view camera
Discussion
Experiences needed please chaps.
I want to fit a rear view camera and monitor to my GTR to keep an eye on what is behind (blue lights, etc). You can see enough close up with the mirrors but the wing gets in the way for further away items.
What solutions have others come up with if any.

Has anybody installed a rear view camera and done away with the wing mirrors? Would this be accepted in IVA etc.?
Hmmmm, another solution I was thinking about would be to install a small camera in a pod (better aerodynamics than the dumbo style pods) in place of the mirrors. A dash display with split screen could be used to monitor the left and right sides.

hi
you can not use an electronic camera for an mot, IMO I very much doubt SVA will allow it..
The basic rules of a modern car for MOT purposes are 2 mirrors minium per car ...
This must be drivers mirror plus either centre rear view mirrow or passenger side mirror) ..For Cars fitted with dark tinted rear screens(peugeot 206sw) the windscreen mounted rear view mirror is not compliant with road regs because of the tint, therefore the min requirement on these vehicles is ok because the car is fitted with a outside mirrors on drivers/passenger sides...
With the Ultima GTR the min requirements are the 2 outer mirrors,BUT if you knock one off(and same rules for the 206sw) you are technically driving a car that does not conform to the road traffic act..
You can not build a GTR either with only one mirror..but might be able to on a canam if you have a centre rear view.
I have a rear view camera mounted to my GTR and the camera is infrared too so at night its great for parking but headlight glare...I have a centre head mounted 7 inch screen which is tilted to wards me and I use quite alot..you need a non-wide angle camera of which there is only 1 company i have found so far within reasoanable pricing that works well..The picture quality is the same as a 480 line bullet camera and ive covered it in previous posts last year(sorry I cant remember when..
If you want some photos just let me know.

My setup sounds similar to Dom's, although I have a 120degree CCD camera. The CCD in theory gives a better image than a CMOS camera but IMO is no where near as good as a real rearview mirror, I have no idea what the picture from a CMOS camera would look like.
All in all this is good for reversing, with no reversing lights, but being able to pickout detail on a car some distance behind, forget it.

I am going to fit a perioscope on mine! - I jest not!
You know- one of those angled morror things!
hi looked at those as the 1970 ferrari le mans cars had them( you can see it in the Steve McQueen film LeMans), but will that effect airflow into the rear clip and visability.... i thought of the wrc roof vent but pointing the other way so you could pop it down when not in use!!You know- one of those angled morror things!

Yes camera image will never be the same as the real thing

For what it's worth, I have a Nissan pathfinder with a reversing camera built in as standard, which means they've spent a lot of time and money finding something that works as best as possible ( And it must be quite good as the camera head alone is £500.00!!!! Even with Nissan inflated prices, that's an expensive camera)
Anyway, even with a good quality camera you get no sense of distance, if an object or car is only 20feet away, in the view on the screen it looks more like 100 yards away. This would mean you will either spend far to long staring at a screen trying to figure out what's behind you (not a good idea when traveling at speed) or you just won't see it properly until it's right up your backside. So is it worth fitting one... I'd have to say IMHO .... Unless you see a system working that gives you a good sense of distances ....no!

Thanks for the replies.
It sounds as though no one has found a solution that works yet. I can understand why a reversing camera doesn't give enough detail, as the field of view required for it to work as a reversing aid would be to great but surely a camera with a longer range lens and narrower field of view would produce an acceptable image.
I use CCTV cameras in one of my businesses and it is possible to get cameras with quite long range lenses now. I will investigate their use as a rear view camera and if I find a solution I will report back

can your cameras produce a reverse image as most screen wont reverse the image??It sounds as though no one has found a solution that works yet. if so i can test one on my set up and report results to you... my 90 degree camera is better than the 120-150 wide angles so i recon a 60 or 40 degree would be best?
Dom
I can get a zoom camera which will enable you to read a numberplate at 150m and the lens is 3.6 to 126mm with a remote controller so it could double as both a reversing camera and long range rear view.
I can also get smaller fixed lens cameras with either 6, 8, 12, or 25mm lens.
All of theses cameras would need a waterproof housing creating as they are not IP65 rated but all are 12 volt.
I have got a monitor which reverses the image that I can test the cameras with so a trip to my supplier to try a few out next week seems to be the next step.
I will keep you informed.

Time to look at the new style home and business cameras. They are up to 5mp to 4k and can pan around/enlarge, even 360. They have their own large storage and are wi-fi 12v. All you need is a power supply-no return wires
These are incredible quality-however, are they vibration proof? can they be removed from their casings?
You can get each camera to record up to a week at a static location, so an occasional camera on a car would store tons of driving time. It can be monitored on a phone, PC, iPad or tele, the configurations are endless.
The data can also be sent rather than going directly to the enclosed SD card-both are options.

I am installing them at my home to replace conventional cameras & system

Hi Roger.
In the end I didn't bother with a camera. My rear view mirrors (not Factory) are very good
and I have not found it necessary to fit a camera.
I have fitted parking sensors instead.
Camera's (and lights) are improving/developing at a phenomenal pace so whatever you fit today will be obsolete tomorrow!

I've done this to death.
I have used Hi res tablet smaller 7" mirror style screen, one out of an Audi A8.
Myriad cameras all used in combination with the above.
The best case scenario IMO is it's useful as a reversing camera, use as a rear view mirror is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
A periscope is an interesting idea I'm sure if you can figure a periscope that interfaces with the outside of the windscreen (rather than modding bodywork) may prove a better solution.

Funnily enough I just purchased a 7" touch screen for my Raspberry pi with a view to doing something similar to:
