Hi all, still awaiting the delivery of our Ultima. Just as well really as garage still needs emptied, (dam doors jammed-not been opened for years) let alone thinking about tools and floor. (work always seems to get in the way)

My inital thought was to paint the garage floor. However, looking into how it should be done properly makes me think is it really worth it?

The garage is pretty big around 18x26 feet. Is it really neccesary to paint the floor as it will cost a small fortune and a lot of time.

What do you guys reckon?

Yes paint the floor.
And paint the walls white.

You are going to spend a good few hours in there so make it the best place to work in.

Arghh. Any advice on doing the floor or what paint to get?

Should i follow this?
http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-paint-a-ga...

or just clean it down and slap some paint down (i already know the answer LOL)

(gonna have to shift a saxo thats been sitting in garage for years now and all the junk that has been accumulated)

oh another quick question does Ultima (Richard/Ted) phone or send a letter when its due for delivery?

Yes I would follow the guide as you quote. I've done a couple of floors and it is well worth taking the time to clean and seal the floor before painting it. The paint just bonds and lasts so much better.
I used International Floor sealer and Floor paint when I did mine and was very pleased with the results and it lasted well.

Epoxy base two or three coats of clear for strenght. two coats of Urethene color for U.V. defense and then clear urethene. Yes its exspensive yes its a hassel but when you are done you will be very glad you did it. As someone above said you are getting ready to spend a lot of time in the garage start with a good base and work up from there. The difference in insulation between the above and bare concrete is enouugh by itself. Lee

Flexible FLOOR-TILES guys... I would do nothing else!

So easy to lay with a rubber hammer and Stanley knife and instant!

Clean - moveable - even used them for the bench top!

Done it twice now!

Did the floor paint thing before, but would NEVER do it again - far too much hassle - doesn't last -

Floor -tiles is the way.... you will not regret it!

If you're not going to use the garage afterwards then floor tiles would be the way to go, plus they will keep your feet a little warmer. I would spend time making sure you have good lighting and are warm as you'll be spending a lot of time in there through those dark winter months. biggrin

painted mine with 'international' but it still comes up over time. I got huge chequer pattern stainless plates in the end. Now i can spill what ever i want on the floor and dont have to replace tiles.
Also got some rubber floor tiles from machine mart for a bit of comfort while sat/laying on the floor.

mmm. Never thought about using carpet. this could be the cheapest route, warmer and nicer on my feet.

Looks like i will scrub floor and walls. Paint the walls white and get some cheap carpet and lots of adhesive spray.

Will the carpet not make it difficult to wheel around trolleys and other equipment.?

might have to get some 100w bulbs

NO! They throw too many shadows. Increase the number of lights. Not the brightness. Flouro' tubes are better than traditional Bulbs.

Good luck

There are some good, cheap industrial lino-type coverings too......just use plywood pads under any high load point.
On the lights I bought 20 stubby bayonet light fittings for 99 pence each off flea-bay, fitted them with 60 watt equiv eco bulbs....also very cheap......its dazzling bright now...26 x 20 ft area.

Good Luck.

You dont have any of those problems with proper garage floor interlocking-tiles - it really is a no-brainer. Wouldn't have anything else on my floor.

No glues needed
Warmer
Clean
Easy to install
petrol-oil proof + most other solvents
resilient
Things bounce but don't break (normally)
Reasonable price
Easy to disassemble and move to another garage (as I have done)
Lots of different colours and patterns
Can be used as a replacement surface on your benches
Doesn't ruck, even when using a trolley with small wheels

Absolutely brilliant
And I don't sell them!

I used some cheap epoxy floor paint, was going to use the clear coat on the top but never got around to it. Oil and even acetone wiper of easy, it fact acetone cleans of oil and other crap nicely.... Well worth doing and i painted my 28x41 with 4 cans at $99 a can so not that expensive....
