Fuel sending unit

The VDO units the factory supplly look to be the same style units that are used in the 80's model Porsche's. Does anyone know which model they borrowed it from?

Why do you need to know?

This is not an inflamatory question just that that design of sender is freely available in a range of lengths so I'm not understanding why the factory would even know or care what other cars may have used that length sender.
