Polishing Wheels

Are the standard wheels from the factory laquered or just polished. My wheels are corroding a little around the bolts and I am thinking about removing a couple at a time (tyre deflated) making it much easier to polish. Would this approach be OK?

My understanding, which could be wrong, is that the centre section is just polished ali but the rims are both clear anodised and laquered.
If that is the case then you will have no success trying to polish them as the anodising will be very difficult to shift.
