Making plans and need some help Ultima/Supra?
Discussion
I am an ex-pat living in Taiwan/Japan but have fallen for the Ultima and plan to build my own car when I return to the UK in 6 months time.
I have some questions that if you have minute could you let me know your thoughts.
Q:
I am very familiar with Japanese cars and wondered if a Supra engine would fit inside the chassis?
Q
Does anyone have diagrams of the chassis and how much space is available that you could send to me?
If anyone has drawings in any format then please send them to me at reuben@realapple.com
I am a mechanical engineer in my day job and would love to get a Surpa engine into this as I can get 600hp for around $2000.
Q
Or does anyone have any experiance in turbo fits into the Utima and any problems known with cooling?
Q
Does any recommend buying a 2nd hand version and then using the complete car to customise or to build from scratch?
Q: How easy would it be to sell the existing engine if I bought a 2nd hand car as I really want to go down a turbo route with a new engine?

gtr-tt, is the supra straight-6 longer than the BMW M3 engine. I ask because there´s one built in Belgium with this BMW engine. See www.qvickmotors.com/en
Some lenghts: SBC (27 inches), BMW V12 (29 inches), BMW M3 (72 cms - 28,34 inches).
The M3 lenght is including the double Vanos.
I think that you are a true expert mech regarding the Supra engine, is it really that long?
BTW, very impressive GTR both you swedish are building, and lucky for living in Sweden, because with a twin-turbo setup you´d have serious temp issues in Spain.

If not a Supra turbo - not seen many going doing the rotary route, any one have experiance of using the Rotary turbo from a mazda and any recommendations?
I would still really like some drawings in any format that I could review, I can read any drawings format.
If someone is extra nice and they don't have electronic drawings but actual prints and they access to a scanner, any chance of scanning and sending to me?
I don't mind taking on a big project and modifying the car to make this work, I am an egineer in my day job and would love to attempt this project. This is why I need the drawings to model the design and changes I need to do as that alone could take me 3 months as I will need to redraw the whole car.

The rotary deal has been brought up before, if you do a search you'll find a few threads. From what I've heard, the factory don't like rotaries (not that it matters).
Why not just use a japanese v8, like a lexus/toyota v8 or nissan/infiniti v8? They are great engines and definately my choice over other v8s.
I'm guessing you want a naturally turbo'd car though, for easy power?

I will need to search the board again about the rotary engines as missed this.
Yea I like turbo's, worked with them for 10 years and can really mess around with them, I like to get my hands dirty and try new things.
I have been living in asia for 3 years and seen some wicked car's across here, I love the engines to play with and I just can't go for the american grunt.
I will maybe try and contact the factory and see if they have some drawings of the chassis but just was not sure how receptive they would be to release that.
If I have a copy of the drawings it will let me model different engines and thermals on SW before I even attempt the build.
I really can't wait to get started this. I am like a kid in a candy shop.

I'd twin turbo a japanese v8. I really want to use the 1UZFE myself, not sure if I'll be able to do it legally though. The 1UZFE as you probally know is an extremely strong engine from the factory. You know how strong a 2jzgte is, well the 1uzfe is stronger, with more cubes and a much better ability to rev. It doesn't actually cost that much to turbocharge the engine since most of the work is just bolt on.
How much power are you looking for?
Haven't actually checked to see how large the 1uzfe but it is very compact for a quad cam. There are a few lambo replca companies in aus/nz using the 1uzfe (3 that I know of). Alot of cobra replicas are also starting to use this engine.
It'd also be great to see a twin turbo lexus v8 to show these guys how good these engines really are

That was a very interesting post as I have never looked into lexus engines before and I like what I have read, this looks too easy!!! Take a look at this
www.lextreme.com/TT-System.htm
Can anyone give me the dimensions of the chassis / engine bay on the GTR to get me started?
This looks like a real alternative and a massive costs saving versus the american blocks, all the saving could go into a water cooler...

Yep zab that place has alot of info on the UZFE engines.
A lexus V8 turbo setup is cheaper than any sort of hi-po build on a sbc. If budget is important I'd think it's a much, much better option. If $$$ doesn't matter it's really down to preference whether you want a high-tech screamer or a big grunter.

Depending on how much power you want, building a turbo ls1 motor isn't very expensive. The stock motor can handle boost fairly well. I am going to run 7 psi on a stock used motor and hope to get about 650hp out of it. Several ls1 owners run higher boost on the stock motor, all though I wouldn't recommend it. LS1motorsports is boosting a stock motor with 125K miles on it and getting 775 Rear Wheel HP / 865 Lb Ft of Torque.
Ignoring all the extra things like the turbo itself, ecu, IC, bov, wastegate, etc that you would need on any turbo car the only expensive part of my turbo set up was the exhaust, only because it had to be custom made. Fitting a non Chevy motor in the car is going to had additional cost due to all the fabrication need to fit the motor and hook it to the Trans.
Given the choice and a endless buget I would probably go with a Lexus or supra motor over the ls1 also. Since I am used to rotary's and street bikes, the 6500 redline of an ls1 is going to seem a little strange.
Here is a picture of my turbo setup, all the exhaust work was done by a friend of mine. Who(shamless plug
) is willing to make up a jig if anyone is interested in the headers

Mkoch, I just assumed turboing an LS1 to higher power was quite a bit more expensive, didn't realize the stock engine was so strong.
I know what you mean about bikes, I'm a biker myself and 6.5k just doesn't do it for me. One thing I do know is that it costs alot to make an LS1 rev. I'd spend more on taking the LS1 redline to 8k than I would turboing the lexus v8 and taking that to 9.5k.

From my reading of ls1tech.com it looks like the stock block can hold about 9psi pretty reliably. The down side of the ls1 displacement is you are not going to get it to rev without spending a fortune. Up side is with all it's displacement it will have plenty of torque before the boost comes on. On my canam there isn't much room for a good sized intercooler so the fact the ls1 will make pretty big hp numbers at low boost is nice. Not sure how much psi you need to run on a lexus motor, but the more psi you run the more heat you will make and the bigger the IC needs to be.

Well the LS1 uses cubes to make power, the 1UZFE (lexus v8) can simply use revs. You could take the engine up to 10k with just a few mods, maybe even more. Only problem with that is usable power range. The LS1 will never have that problem. There are guys running 8-8.5k redlines in their SC400/LS400s so low end torque can't be a problem for a car nearly half the weight. I guess it comes down to whether you want a grunter or a screamer. It'd be nice if the 1uzfe had vvti.

The engines are able to get some good horse power and also benefit from being super light, you could probably squeeze a triple rotor into the car. 1000bhp is very possible.
Not sure if the gearbox/transaxle would be a problem, the engine goes the other way!
Oh naff all engine braking as well
