Afternoon all.

I have recently purchased a new-build house and being the forward thinking chap that I am, asked for power and TV ariel sockets to be relocated to the centre of the wall where the TV is going to be mounted.

However, I didn't think about SKY TV requiring a phone line, hence the phone socket being located on another wall!
Is there a wireless solution that will save me the time / effort / mess of chasing in a new phone line and socket or do I need to get the dust sheets out?

Many thanks

There is a homeplug type solution that can send the phone signal over mains wiring.

Are you still in contract with them? If not you dont have to have the box connected to a phone line. The only ones you HAVE to connect are multi-room boxes.

You can buy a 'out of contract' ... contract. We already had the sky box, so just asked for the month to month contract. Doesn't come with any free stuff, but if you've got it...

Thanks for the advise all, we haven't yet sorted the SKY so I shall have a word with them re. the necessity for a phone line and also have a look into the mains routing and wireless phone extension options too.

When we had SKY installed they never plugged in the phone line. Never been a issue.

How apt, just had a falling out with Sky about one of the multi-room boxes not being connected to a phone line. There's one there but somewhere there is a fault. Long and short of it is the were going to remove my discount unless I remedied it. So I canceled Sky as I barely watch it anyway.

Agree with all other comments, telephone line is not needed unless you need a multiple boxes or want to use the RED button interactivity.

If the installer kicks up a fuss, then tell him to connect it on a temp link and your will install it properly later. Then just disconnect it when he is gone.

DO NOT leave him alone to do it, the next thing you will find is that the cable will be tacked to the skirting all the way round the room, like they did to a £3m apartment is was working on. Fact was there was a cable for them already in place, just hidden behind a plate!

I used to fit sky systems and there is a simple solution.

When they come to install is just tell the guy your fitting you own phone extension and he can just leave it plugged in lying across the floor. Then once a month plug in a phone extension to the socket and leave it over night.

The box will automatically send a signal to sky saying it is connected to the phone line and will keep there system happy.

BUT!! if you want to use sky box office you will need to plug in the phone line. If you want HD and want to you the anytime service you need the phone line plugged in.

Also some of the phone extension kits that send the signal around the house's ring main some times dont like to work with sky + box's. Best thing route a phone line, it will save you lots of hassle in the future.

The only reason I leave mine plugged into the phone line is because I can remotely set it to record from my computer at work or my iPhone which is handy.

I'm about to have SKY installed tomorrow and from a google search a phone line is needed for new SKY installs as part of the contract. Previously SKY anytime + worked from the dish but the new sky anytime + progressively downloads programmes therefore requiring a broadband connection.

However, if you don't want anytime + or on demand services you dont need a phone line.

Ditto
Didn't supply one didn't connect one.
Never had a complaint from Sky. Now regards my Broadband Sky thing, that's utter rubbish.
It stops, starts, hangs cuts out, I had better Internet on a dial up on an island off the west coast of Scotland, I now live in Yorkshire.

Really? That's interesting. That would mean one less wire into the back of the cabinet then if I didn't have to have it connected.

Is the advert text out of date - says it won't work with Sky Plus?

Phone line Isn't required for Anytime on ANY boxes - It's all downloaded via the dish. I'd assume Dave is getting confused with the new Anytime+ feature. Anytime+ requires an ETHERNET (Not Phone Line) connection to the router to work.
