Tv mounting to stud walls
Discussion
What method do you guys use when mounting a TV onto a stud wall?
The scenario is mainly with a small TV with a vertical mounting plate and not being able to place it over a stud.
So without being able to fix directly into a stud would you be happy to use such things as toggle bolts? if so what sort of size TV would you be happy to hang on just the plasterboard?

cut a square section out of the plasterboard where you want to mount the screen, add a couple of noggins and fix them with screwed metal brackets for strength. Put square cut out back in and screw back up. Clean up the gap around the square, fill and sand it then mount the bracket on the new noggins as well as the uprights.
well thats what I did anyway. Probably a bit of overkill to be honest, but its not going anywhere!
eta it was a 37" screen, but you could hang any size off that

Just get proper plasterboard plugs. I've a 32" Toshiba mounted to the wall in our bedroom, it's a timber frame house with all plasterboard walls. The mount is fixed with 4 bolts, none in to the studs. It hasn't fallen down, and isn't going to.

As long as the mounts are well fitted then all good. Remember the weight is vertical so the walls at that point are strong. Think of your kitchen cupboards, all the stuff in them weighs more than a TV I'd wager.
For larger sets which will conceal it , I have used a sheet of 3/4" plywood to bridge between studs ( just fitted on the surface and screwed through the plasterboard into the studs ) , then painted to match the wall - TV bracket then fits onto the plywood . I have routinely fitted screens upwards of 42" using this method .
If you are happy to cut and replace plasterboard , reinforcement can be put inside the wall .
