Fitting a Flat TV into an alcove ?

Obviously not a problem with a CRT, due to the depth.

However I'd like to put a modern TV at the back of alcove, but anyone sitting off axis will have the screen cut off. Is there a trick bracket that will let me move the TV forwards (without rotating) for viewing with the family, and backwards again when there's only 2 of us ?

Yes. There are all sorts of brackets, from ones that just move in and out a few inches to ones that move in, out, up down and for several feet.
