I am planning to mount my tv above the unit and put the centre speaker just below it.

I don't fancy the idea of drilling holes through the walls to feed the cables - i'd rather have a socket in the wall that hdmi, optical cables etc can be plugged into from the TV and then another socket appearing further down the wall to feed into the amp and everything.

What is the best way to do this? I want the install to be as tidy as possible.

Suggestions/links appreciated.

Cheers!

I just used 'D'-shaped trunking up the wall behind the TV and down behind the A/V unit. I thought of having sockets with HDMI, aerial etc connections, but in the end it was far simpler just to run the cables straight through from the Sky/DVD to the TV. You get fewer problems with bad connections too.

Sounds like you need something like this:

My whole house is being replastered so I'm running cables in walls and making sure there are no cables in sight at all. I'm not sure if I'll end up using wall plates or not, it depends on how tidy the install looks without them. The HDMI from the screen is going in the wall and it will pop out round the corner where the Amp will live, so as both points will be obscured anyway, I may just pop them through the wall.

I should have this finished over the weekend so will have a better idea then.

ETA - If you want a socket by the TV and one lower down, then you will have to drill in to the wall as the sockets need to connect up to each other somehow so you may as well just get a drill and masonry drill bits out smile

A friend of mine recently did this by fixing 2 vertical lengths of timber to the wall then attaching a sheet of MDF (or plasterboard) to it, with the ends proud by 50mm or so to give a recess, then painting it the same colour as the wall. It runs from behind the unit holding the DVD etc to just above the bottom of the TV. This means he can run cables wherever he wants and it makes quite a good feature.
