hello all.

as above. i recently emigrated and have been given a furniture allowance that works on a receipt basis. i've moved into a fully furnished so have decided to blow the lot on hifi.

there's already a decent hifi/AV system in the living room so this will be going in my bedroom - roughly 14ft square. i have some hifi in shipping but will likely only be retaining my record deck.

currently leading the running is the naim uniti

http://www.naimuniti.com/

which i can buy locally for my max. budget, meaning i'll need to retain my current floorstanders, phono stage etc. and upgrade these at a later date.

however, floorstanders just wont work in this room, i need bookshelf type speakers. i also wonder if i can put together a system for the same money as the uniti.

primary sources will be LP and CD, though ipod connectivity is nice to have. valve amplification would be lovely but i'd want a good un with speakers to match - not happening at this price i fear.

local supply is dire but i'm coming home for a couple of weeks in august and will be everywhere from brighton to cardiff to leeds, so don't mind going out of my way to pick up a bargain.

any suggestions?

Naim Unity is easily the best bet at this price point.

Work nicely with a set of Totem's.... or 805S' if you can stetch the budget...

You can't go wrong with naim. I've had a Naim CDi player from (1992) and it is still going strong and only been serviced once. Buy Naim you won't regret it.

how much are totems and which model do you mean? the b&w's look great and have rave reviews, but at the list price i would have to wait until a pair came up 2nd hand.

I ran a Nait5i/CD5i/Rega P3 combo for a few years with the Totem Arro's

And they were fantastic, especially in a smaller room setup.

But the B&W are outstanding and that is what I run now, but are at a much higher price point. Go for an audition with the Totems and you won't be disappointed!
