Hi,

I am hoping that the PH collective can point me in the right direction, Google is sometime useless and in this case not very helpful.

Firstly, I am after some insanely loud and bassey speakers for my ipod, I would like them to accept a 3.5mm jack input also. Ideally they need to be fairly compact so that I can take them on holiday, but loud enough to throw a pretty menacing party. If there are any sand/dust/water resistant options even better!

Then, I am after a nice pair of headphones to play music and video audio out of iPod and iPad, again they need to be relatively compact, but more important to me is is keeping the noise in and not annoying my neighbours as well as also being pretty sturdy - again for travel!

Any recommendations would be very helpful.

It depends on your budget, but for headphones I'd suggest some Sennheiser IE8's. They're not cheap, but they're compact, have great sound quality including masses of bass and no sound leakage (that I've found so far at least).
If I was looking for something in terms of a bassy iPod dock, I'd suggest that getting a decent-ish quality stereo would be a better shout. If you're really after an iPod doc though, the B&W Zeppelin is a good shout. Again, not cheap though.

Thanks, the headphones look good. The speakers are probably a bit too big and expensive, I am looking for something a little more robust for travelling and cruder in terms of just chucking out sheer noise! ;-)

If you can find some speaker that run out of the data port on the ipod rather than the 3.5 jack you'll bypass the headphone pre amp (on iphone and touch at least) and get a nicer sound.

I've always found the problem is that bass (in the truest sense of the word) is quite hard to generate without big speakers. I've got a small JBL iPod dock which replicates audible bass very effectively, but there's not much substance to it. If you find anything small that has more than that, I'd certainly be interested to hear...
