What earphones are the best at isolating noise for £100? Does the earphones themselves make any difference or is it all about the fit of the buds?

Shure are worth a good look.

Shure they are yum They basicly sit in your ear and are quite a snug fit. So it's like using ear plugs which have a speaker in them.

I used a pair almost daily for a few years while going to college on the bus for 45 minutes each way. They cut out the noise enough so that someone can be shouting your name and you won't be able to hear them if listening to a song. You don't need the music blearing out either.

Best for blocking out noise are Etymotic, then Shure and Westone.

Cool, so is it solely a matter of how they fit in your ear, or do the electronics/mechanics of the earphone make a difference as well?

My Shures came with loads of different ear buds to choose from so fit shouldn't be an issue.

Think I got 3 different sizes of silicone and the same in foam ear buds.

Generally speaking dynamic earphones isolate less than balanced armature earphones.

So do etymotics and they can also be fitted with customised earpieces, like the ones musicians use.

I have both (pickd up some Shures at LHR once when I forgot to pack my etymotics) and I prefer the etymotics, although the Shures are good (and the need to wrap the cable back over the ear is irritating).

Probably the 215's? I have those and they're excellent although take some getting used to putting them in. £100 is about right but you can prob find them cheaper.

Could someone with noise isolating earphones conduct a little experiment for me.

With your earphones in place simply eat a digestive biscuit and tell us what it sounds like. A cream cracker is probably even better.

Short answer, they isolate outside noise and magnify "inside" noise.

In other words, not ideal to use while eating and drinking.
