Has anyone had any experiences?

Their policy is "If we decide your product cannot be repaired, or is uneconomical to repair, we'll replace it with the same model. If it's no longer available, we'll discuss an alternative settlement with you."

I bought my Panasonic 42P60 about 4 years and 11 months ago for £1600. A fault developed and JL are saying its uneconomical to repair. Someone will contact me on Monday with a settlement.

Help! I have no idea what to do? I dont want one their budget £500 42" Panasonics. What can I ask from them? If anything?

Cheers

Whatever they offer you will be better than a 5 year old TV, surely?

I would consider yourself lucky that 5 years on they are still prepared to offer you anything!

Colleague of mine had this with a Sony TV that died after 3 years. They called him and offered him the current TV at the same "level" in the range.

e.g. say there are 3 "levels" - Boggo, Nice, Top Banana.

He'd bought a mid range "nice" telly, so they looked at the current range and gave him the current equivalent.

Hope that makes sense? If not, he was happy with the experience.

You're likely to get another one of the same quality. Whether they take the price as the indicator of quality, or the place in the range/ specification will decide if you get a 3D TV or not (any £1600 panasonic will be 3D I think) which would be nice.

My previous tv (24" Philips CRT widescreen) went on the blink after 3 years. John Lewis agreed to replace it and offered the new model of the same tv.

Things have moved on a bit since then, tv's change much more quickly, but would imagine they would try and get it as close to the model as you had.

Personally I think the 42PX60 was one of Panasonics best tellies and I expect you've got used to the fact it's silver. However I expect they'll offer you a 42C3 which would be the latest equivalent. It does have Freeview HD built in which is a bit of a bonus but I always think the surround looks a bit, well, cheap. Mind you a new telly after nearly 5 years can't be bad!

Anything of a similar size and quality after almost 5 years is a bonus. DSG stores would try everything they can to wriggle out of dealing with you - claiming water damage, mis-use etc.

Would be interested to hear whether anyone has claimed with DSG or Comet after 4 yrs 11 months with their own warranty

I've just had a TH42 PX600 deemed uneconomic to repair at 4 1/2 yrs old by John Lewis.
Blue line down the screen was the end of it, was gutted as it had a brilliant picture and superb sound ( for tv speakers)
Was offered a bottom of the range 42"
Panasonic plasma as a replacement priced at £649.
Having viewed the TV I politely declined and explained that although the spec on paper for the new TV was higher it was in fact a bottom of the range product that looked cheap and sounded abysmal.
John Lewis would not budge re offering a higher spec set and offered the £649 as a credit towards any TV.
I bought a 50" VT30 and got them to price match the cheapest deal I found.

Overall I was not impressed with the service, as a long time loyal customer I have never had to chase them up for anything, this time they dithered over the price match for 5 days and once it was agreed didn't even inform me!
Numerous promised call backs never happened!
It felt like they really did not want to honour the undersale.
I have never had an issue with any aspect of John Lewis service before and the whole reason I use them is for the hassle free service at the point of and after sale.

Stephen F. I think you've done incredibly well there. The bottom of the range screen , probably the U30, wouldn't have been much more than £450.00 RRP so don't know where they've got £649.00 from!

Just checked their site, they have since reduced the TV they offered by £100 to £549
It was a : Panasonic Viera TX-P42S30B Plasma HD 1080p TV, 42 Inch with Built-in Freeview HD
Pleased I went for the 50 inch VT30 though, price matched from 2199 to 1649 is a good deal I think, no doubt it will soon be far cheaper but i had no TV so could not wait.

I had a 29" CRT Sony Trinitron telly fail at 4.5yrs old with a colour gun fault and DSG replaced the tube, which a TV engineer neighbour was amazed at. They also lost the remote and sent me a new one, and those Sony Command remotes must cost a few bob.

My mother's had two recent issues with JohnLewis - a Panasonic DVD player failed and they said hard luck and the plastic top of her JL own brand washing machine split apart and they said it wasn't covered as the machine still functioned. It looks really crap though.

Well, they offered me a 42S30 TV which retails at £540 at JL. We had a few discussions and anyway reached an agreement.

I have ordered the 55VT30 and paid an additional amount towards the TV. Still waiting for a few things from JL.

1) I am waiting for a confirmation that my new purchased TV has a full 5 year warranty, which it should as it was confirmed over the phone, but I do want it in writing.
2) A price match refund!
3) A delivery date!

Fingers crossed!

Can I ask how much you got them to price match for? I have purchased the same from JL

John Lewis matched PRC who were selling at 1649 with five year warranty. Not sure if same deal is still on, noticed John Lewis have now reduced the 50 inch vt30 to 1899

Are you one of the many that abuse John Lewis generosity?

Ummm well I've purchased the TV less than 1 month ago so they say you can reclaim the difference if you find it cheaper within that period ..so in that respect I will be calling upon their generousity....

Ah, I see. I took it as you'd got 'an issue' with a TV nearly 5-years old from them and was trying to get another from them.

I'm a cynical bd aren't I?
