After reading on here and other forums about multi room streaming devices such as Sonos and Squeezebox, I got very interested in it and started looking to see if it would solve my issue. I love to have music on as much as possible and currently run a "traditional" separates HiFi in the lounge with a dock for my iPod. However, I also like to cook and need a better solution than just turning up the volume to hear it in the kitchen. I priced up a Sonos set up (ZP120 & Q Acoustics 2010) and it is very expensive indeed.
After thinking about the outlay, I have come to the conclusion that a speaker switching unit (such as a QED SS22), a set of Q Acoustics 2010s and some speaker cable would give me the same effect as a Sonos system for a third of the outlay.
Is there any significant loss in sound quality using a switching unit such as the one mentioned?

Could you not just put a Squeezebox Radio or Sonos Play 3 in the Kitchen?

I listened to a Sonos Play 3 in a shop on saturday and was slightly disappointed by the sound quality. The ZP120 and Q Acoustic 2010s set up from the same controller were infinitely better sounding in the same room, hence why the potential outlay on a Sonos set up had suddenly increased, causing me to question the whole endeavour.
I fear that the Squeezebox Radio would have the same sound quality issue. I think I've been spoiled by my separates system (by no means high end) sounding a certain way all these years and all-in-on speaker/amp units just don't seem to have the same depth of sound.

Fair enough. Looks like speaker switching is the way to go then. hehe

If you can route the cables effectively, I'd definitely go for the switcher. The beauty of Sonos is being able to listen to different music in different rooms. If you want to listen to the same music in each room, there are much cheaper ways to do it.

I have got 2 Sonos Play 3s in my kitchen configured as a stereo pair. They sound good, but I guess they should do for £500! I like the fact they are neat and that I could split them to use as two zones if I was having a party etc, but £500 would have bought me a good stereo setup.
