What AV Receiver?
Discussion
Super quick thread!
Basically my Yamaha RX-V1500 AV receiver has died and I've been told that repairing it could cost anywhere between £120-160. I'm a bit reluctant to bin it, as back in the day (6-7yrs?) it was a rather expensive purchase. However there is no looking past the fact that £160 could be spent on a newer unit that is most likely better in terms of specification.
So I have about £200-300 to spend ... Can I find anything that will match the sound quality of the AV-V1500? Any suggestions? There looks to be a few good choices on Richer Sounds. Onkyo, Yahama, Pioneer?
Cheers!

I've had an Onkyo 605 for the last 4.5 years which I have no complaints about...
I went for it (at the time) as it will take any input and output it via HDMI (at time the lower models wouldn't do this and you had to run multiple cables between the amp and screen).
I'd like to upgrade next year to the 709 (i think) as it allows output to two screens

What do you think to these two? I'm hoping to order one tonight

It's bought
I had a quick look at the spec of the Denon and it looks like a reasonable bit of kit to me. The one main thing that would want me to upgrade from your current amp to a more modern one would be the network and online capabilities. Obviously, these functions are only worth upgrading for if you're going to use them. I have a network capable amp and I use this so that I can play audio from network storage without the need for a network streamer, the capability is built in to the amp and displays album artwork up on the TV. It's not quite as good as having a dedicated media server, but it's not far off the mark. I have hundreds of albums stored up on my network and can browse through them on the TV and play them through the Amp. Spotify is also pretty good. All you need is to connect the amp to your router and you have an infinite music collection at your finger tips
If you're not worried about this type of function, I'd probably just get the Yamaha fixed.

- I bet you buy a new amp

I'm popping over to Richer Sounds in Eton this afternoon to buy the Denon - It looks rather shiny
I quite like the USB compatibility too, which my current Yamaha amp lacks. However I might have a quick look to see what else they have in stock, just in case there is a better spec unit for a few quid more! Either or, I'm walking out with a new amp this afternoon

I think the salesman was a bit shocked by the fact I didn't really study any others, but I did do some research prior to the purchase and the USB/Network connectivity of the 1912 swung it for me. It's also an excuse to use the iPad as a fancy remote!
ETA: I'm glad I made the purchase - There is definitely an improvement in sound quality over my previous Yamaha.

Slightly O/T but how many people with AV receivers actually use the tuner? Is it a feature that has been made redundant with all the radio channels available via satellite and Freeview?
I dont bother now as there are some good quality online streams. But a Good FM reciever 10 years ago provided decent enough sound quality.
My apartment has a dedicated radio antenna as well as TV and 2 satellites connections, so we do use the tuner quite a lot. I’ll admit that the sound quality is better going through the satellite but it involves additional steps (turning TV on, using SKY remote to find channels etc) whereas you just press “Tuner” on the remote. Doubt I’ll bother if we move somewhere that doesn’t have proper radio antenna already plumbed in.

Good man...we all knew you'd buy something new and shiny
I have an Onkyo TX NR609 which I think is around the £500 mark. The Denon seems fine to me, but worth having a look at the Onkyo. Have fun!
Happy with the 609?

I was literally thinking of putting up a 'what AV reciever' thread a couple weeks ago, but didn't bother. Instead did a bit of my own research and concluded the 609 was eh one for me.

I was looking at the Onkyo and a Yamaha RX-V1067 and decided on the Yamaha as it's essentially a level above the Onkyo but can be had for similar money and offered similar functionality. The downside was that the thing was massive, a good 14cm bigger front to back and as the amp was going to be sat on a shelf in a recess next to a chimney breast which meant it was just too big, so went for the Onkyo and I'm pleased I did, it's a great bit of kit.
As far as gadgets go, it's inoffensive looking and I'd go as far as to say 'quite pretty'. The setup was a doddle, connect all the devices and speakers up, plug the Audyssey microphone in, sit in your favourite seat with the mic and it sets itself up. I tinkered with the config a bit after, but it set itself up pretty well. I was a little worried that the Onkyo may not be powerful enough to run my setup (it's pretty big and I use floor standers at the front) and get the most from it. It does a great job and is more than adequate. It's easy to use, sounds great and even looks nice, so can definitely recommend it. The key stuff for me was that it is network enabled and could plug an MP3 player in to it. When my Iphone is plugged in, a menu pops up on the TV that allows you to search through Albums etc, and is all controlled by the Onkyo remote. Album artwork is popped up on to the TV screen. It's a bit pixelated, so guess it just grabs the artwork from the phone and pops that up on the screen. The amp works well with Music and Films and am very pleased with it.
