I own a Sony 40" Bravia TV at home and regularly download and watch movies on it through an HDMI lead and my laptop.

Trouble is, I love my movies and the laptop is becoming slowwwww as there isn't much room left on it anymore.

A friend suggested to me that an external hard drive via the TV's USB would do the trick, so he came over one night and tried both sorts ('FAT32' and 'NTFS' apparently?) but although the TV recognised BOTH types, it didnt find any files on them..

I remember that I also tried copying a film onto a USB stick before I bought the HDMI lead, and nothing over 2gb would work and you had to convert it to MPG4 which was time consuming and not worth the hassle!

Does anyone know anything about the Sony Bravia range as far as hard drives etc...

The same friend suggested buying a 'media player' with 1tb of storage and give that a go, but I dont want to buy it and find out it doesnt work either..

I really want to get this sorted as my poor laptop is really struggling!

Thanks!

I have the same Bravia 40" model bought in Egypt for our holiday Villa, I tried connecting to a Samsung 700GB USB drive direct to the TV to watch movies , it didn-t work ??. Nether did the Philips surround sound system , with USB I bought with it !! ( Egypt is supposed to be region 2 ??)

now going to take over a UK multi region DVD player , USB , MP4, DIVX compatible player and connect the movies through this ,fingers crossed

Ive found to be all sorts of compatibility issues regarding movies downloaded onto different types of USB hard drives ( dependant on format DivX , etc), Here in Russia we are using a Samsung 50" Tv with Samsung DVD player /USB connection , several of us use different USB memory sticks / drives and in the majority of cases the player will simply not recognise all of the movies which is frustrating .

On a seporate issue does your Bravia have 3 HMDI ports on the TV ? mine has 3 ports but no Scart leads only plug in connectors ,

looking at the best set up to connect PS3 / dvd / surround system , didnt have HMDI cables with me when we went out ,
thinking along the lines of buying 3 HMDI cables and connecting the surround sound system / PS3 and DVD player with them , does this sound about right ?

cheers
