I currently listen to my music (mix of high quality MP3s and Flacs)via my computer into my Denon mini system via the Aux input.

The speakers are 70W made by JPW for Denon. The system is approx 12 years old: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Denon-UDRA-77-Hi-Fi-inte...

If I were to just upgrade the amp and reuse the speakers would I hear a difference. The amp would something around the £100 mark.

Thanks all.

Yes you are likely to hear a difference, but will it be better/more detailed, possibly, but maybe not! It is likely to change the presentation of the music, now whether you prefer the presentation of the new amp to your existing amp is only something that your ears can decide.

Is the £100 new or s/h, if s/h you could definitely get an improvement with something like:-

Ion Obelisk
Rotel RA 820BX or RA 840BX
Pioneer A400
Creek 4040

But these amps are 20-25 years old, so may be past their best reliability wise.

If you are going to buy a £100 new amp, ie a discounted model, then I'd keep the money and enjoy what you have.

I have seen this which is slightly more: http://www.richersounds.com/product/amplifiers-rec...

Do I need to consider a separate soundcard?

You're more likely to get an improvement by upgrading your speakers. Those little JPW's are ok, but pretty basic 'starter' speakers. Denon (used to anyway) make very clean sounding amps, and amp technology hasn't really changed or improved much in decades so if you're happy with your mini system I'd get some better speakers and some decent speaker cable.

Get a separate sound card, i have an asus donor, DONT get a creative, they are a waste of money (ask me how i know). frown
Its no good having good amp and speakers, if the signal getting there, isnt up to the job.

Used to have it feeding a Panasonic midi system, did an ok job.

Now i have it feeding a Sony str-dh100, then on to a pair of roth oli 3 floor standers.

Its very good now. biggrin
