Our old cheapie Hard disc recorder is dying it keeps skipping frames! Which is annoying to say the least!

So looking to buy new box and looking to spend circa £200 on a decent one, question is which to go for FreeSat or freeview HD recorder 500gb. We already have a satellite dish on the house, from previous owners I don’t know if it works ok though have a std satellite box to test it on to ensure ok and can always re adjust if needs be the position etc. Currently getting feed from a very good and big aerial but it is IN the roof which I appreciate is not ideal - though the TV rates the picture quality as 10/10.

Thoughts opinions appreciated as currently I am going to go for which ever is the better solution in Richer Sounds as long as the satellite dish is ok!!!

It is going through a decent Panasonic 42" Plasma HD 1080p TV

thanks for your help

Apart from Dave, 5* and 5USA what channels are there on Freeview that are not on Freesat?

There are more channels on Freesat than Freeview and if you want to tune in the other sat facility then there are even more.

My 32" Panasonic has both Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuners built in but I only have a dish connected at the moment. It is possible to connect a USB HD and record from it as well.

Do you have two cables running off the Sky dish to wherever your freeway/recorder box is going to sit?

Sorry for highjacking the thread but I seem to have two cables coming from the sky dish ( Already there when moved in)

What are the two cables for? I just picked one and it worked fine connected to the freesat? What use is the other one?

You need one cable per tuner. So to record one channel and watch a different live channel, you need 2 cables. If you only have 1 cable, then you can only EITHER watch or record a channel but not both at the same time. **

  • Some boxes allow recording 2, sometimes even 3 channels while watching another but only for certain channels.

Depends what transmitter you are on, not the case for us, fewer on Freeview.

Devil in the detail as always.
