Afternoon all.

I'm looking at AV receivers and getting a bit lost. I want one that can take inputs from 3 HD sources and some component and maybe optical. It has to be 3D capable and sound great.

On the sound front i'll need some speakers. My research so far has me thinking that i could use to free standing speakers and a centre. This will mostly be used for TV / home cinema.

Budget is negotiable, but i want the best value for money possible and don't want to pay too much.

Anyone have any examples of a good home set up they are pleased with on a budget?

David.

I've had this Onkyo for about a month now, and cant' fault it.

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=o...

Conected to it, I have PS3, Xbox, AppleTV and Sky+HD (with Sky audio via assignable optical in), so is more than capable of handling many inputs. HDMI support is v1.4 which I believe is the current 3D standard.

On the speaker front, I have an old Sony 5.1 satellite speaker system, which is more than up to the job for the relative small living room I have in my flat. Your needs may be different.

That looks great but at ~£500 it's more than i want to spend. I also think that i wouldn't use a lot of what that offers.

Then go for its smaller brother, the 509 currently on offer at £289!

That looks like just the ticket.

Currently i have a philips DVD player which uses 5.1 surround. It sounds ideal and if possible i'd like to keep the speakers. The only thing i don't see is an output for the sub. There is a pre-out which i guess would have to go to another amp?

Yeah sorry for going straight in with my 609.

509 is ideal at that price point!

The pre-out for the sub is for powered subs (typically most subs are powered).

I checked and the speakers are only 6 ohms so not sure they'll do the job very well.

Sorry to revive this thread but i've just seen this while browsing amazon. Seems to do everything i need for a bargain price:

Any reason it would be rubbish?

I have the 509 and a set of Onkyo in the box speakers it came with.

I thought the sound was epic and the amp is really easy to use and get the best sound out of. However, I have replaced the front two L&R speakers with some Eltax freestanding speakers (variable rated 4-8 Ohms) as my room required some speakers further apart so they needed to sit by themselves (and we blew the cones on the Onkyo ones at the house warming hehe). But seriously, cracking amplifier. Get it with the basic Onkyo speakers and then start upgrading the speakers as you go...makes it a bit less of a one off cash hit that way!

Ive got a sony str-dh100, that's a stero amp, running 2 roth oli3, floor standers, does a fine job, i would have no problem, buying something else in the range.

Perhaps I didn't look at the link correctly, but yes, I got mine from Richer Sounds in a package complete with Onkyo speakers and sub.

They're okay and a nice starter kit, but I do plan on upgrading the rest of the speakers as time goes on.

Go into Richer Sounds and have a play with stuff they have on display and get some advice there. They'll point you in the right direction for what you need and tend not to be too pushy.

Alternatively hit BestBuy before they're closed down and see what you can find at a bargain?

OK, if the 509 comes with speakers then that might be a done deal.

Although then i'll have to find a 3D DVD player. This is getting expensive again.

Sigh.

Brother in law has a set of mission speakers rated at 6ohms and can be bi wired i could have for cheap. So now i'm looking at the ONkyo 509.

THe only thing i WANT in the thing is network connectivity to stream music from my NAS.
