Optical sound best for SKY+ HD box to receiver?
Discussion
All,
I have noticed over the past few weeks that the sound being broadcast on SKY varies quite a lot. Some programs have excellent surround sound whilst others do not. This is not just limited to watching films where the issue is most apparent.
I have read a few threads on here recommending setting up my receiver (Yamaha RX-V765) to take the SKY feeds in via HDMi for picture and Optical for sound, something the manual has reference to.
Is this going to enhance my sound experience or am I at the mercy of Capt Murdoch and his pirate crew because they promise the full HD picture and sound package but don't deliver it consistantly?
Thoughts gratefully accepted

You should be taking the audio from the Sky box to the amp via Optical to get the best sound really. You should get 5.1 sound that way (whereas you only get "standard" stereo via the HDMI).
Having said that, very few channels actually transmit 5.1 sound and even then it is not all the time!
