Home cinema/surround sound issues
Discussion
Hey guys, a couple of weeks back i decided to invest in a dvd player (believe it or not ive never had a dvd player, never really watched dvds) but ended up coming home with a home cinema kit. The kit is a 5:1 Bush jobby, not excactly high end stuff to say the least but good enough for what i require it for and was half price in Argos, happy days.
So i managed to set it all up with the right cables to the right speakers etc etc but cant get the rear speakers to work. When i do a sound test through each individual speaker they are fine so this tells me they are connected fine but when i plonk on a dvd there's no sound coming from them, only the front 2 and the sub. The instructions are somewhat vague. Also is it possible to connect it all up us such so that sound from normal tv viewing is heard through the surround sound system? ive had a play around with the various cables supplied but with no joy. As you can most probably tell im not the most competent person when it comes to this sort of stuff so any help would be appreciated.

Rear speakers only work when required for a "three dimensional" sound eg F16 jet coming over your head in a film like top gun.
As to tv sound you will need to see if the system has an "aux" input and your tv has a sound output.
If you have sky or virgin or a digibox there should be a sound output.

is it an all in one type set up? i.e. is the dvd player and amp one unit? As the other poster said you'll only get mainly fx sound from the rear speakers and depending on the film this can be quite quiet compared to the main speakers. Have you checked it's in 5.1 mode and not stereo? Check with different dvd's, some I've had the rear surround sound is mixed so low you can hardly hear it.
With your tv, if it's got an audio out (headphone or phono jacks) you can connect it to your Bush unit that way, or you can use the SCART out audio.
