Unsupported audio?
Discussion
I've just tried to play some films (.hkv) from a new WD Elements HDD through my new LG tv, and on most of the files, an error message saying 'unsupported audio' comes up, whilst the film still plays but in silence. A few of the films play fine, but the majority don't. The tv is an LG 42lv550t LED.
Am I right in thinking I am going to have to buy a media player after all? Of is there an update of some kind I can download? Extra codecs or something?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Tried updating the firmware of the TV?
I've read about this a few times on AVF, seems you're not alone. http://www.avforums.com/forums/streamers-network-m...

If the audio is Dolby Digital or DTS then many TVs don't have the codecs to decode this sound track. Many can only handle PCM audio (and 2 channel only at that). Maybe you'll have to re rip your discs or convert the sound in some way...this is why I've stuck to using discs as HTPCs and similar always seem to be hassle (or an excuse for a geek to fiddle, depending on your POV).
You need to RTFM
to see what codecs are supported by the TV, then find out what your proposed media player (Cyclone) can output. If it's only PCM stereo supported then you need to find out if the media player can convert 'on the fly' or whether you'd have to rip the discs in a different way.
If you're only listening to sound via the TV then consider ripping the discs differently, but then you'll have to do it again in future if you get an AV amp that can decode the 5.1/7.1 soundtracks...

So if I buy a media player (cyclone) to play them, I'll still have the same problem? Or will the media player sort it out?
I have a Cyclone player (a Micro 2+) that has played anything I throw at it including some very odd audio tracks and strange video formats. I also have a Popcorn Hour which is much better (but more more expensive!)HTH

I have a Cyclone too (they're great aren't they) - but they don't output Dolby Digital - the best you'll get is Prologic 2.HTH

Not sure you are correct here. I have the newest 2+ which includes a separate digital co-ax cable to enable what they describe as 5.1 surround sound. Not sure exactly what you meant by Dolby Digital but it looks like it does support this.See here for details: http://www.sum-vision.co.uk/productinfo/micro2/cyc...
I have also seen places selling it advertising it as supporting DTS. Cannot confirm that though as it isn't mentioned on the Sumvision site.

I stand corrected then - I have one of these...no 5.1 support (as far as I know), but it certainly plays everything I've thrown at it. Not bad for £16.

Does the Cyclone 2 output DTS over HDMI (if not DTS, then what format is the 5.1?), or is it via the coax only?

Yes 5.1 is new on the 2+. Might be worth upgrading? You do only get it via the coax only. The HDMI only delivers standard stereo.Does the Cyclone 2 output DTS over HDMI (if not DTS, then what format is the 5.1?), or is it via the coax only?

There are a couple of different Cyclones, I have the primus, yes this does put out raw DTS over HDMI, but it needs the newer upgraded firmware.
The Cyclone MKV Full (streaming version) will also output DTS over HDMI.
Both also have spdif over optical output.
As for the smaller £16 micro ones, I doubt it!

If these devices are capable of outputing 'raw' DTS then the Op needs to confirm that his TV can accept this signal via HDMI as I said further up, some TVs only accept stereo PCM.
Very good point. I suspect very few TVs will accept anything other than stereo PCM.Not something I had thought of as everything goes through my receiver with only picture going up to the TV (well audio probably goes up too but I have the volume on the TV set to 0 permanently).

What does the Cyclone Primus (enclosure only 32 quid, as I have a WD Elements 2tbHDD) have over the Cyclone Micro2+? There are a couple of different Cyclones, I have the primus, yes this does put out raw DTS over HDMI, but it needs the newer upgraded firmware.

If nothing, then I'll go for the Micro2+
