Hi I'm looking to get some new headphones to listen to rock mostly.

This will mainly be through my macbook pro or ipod although I might get a headphone amp for my separates and vinyl later.

I have tried some sennheisers and denon ( all that is available to audition locally) and the £200-250 sound pretty ok especially denon ahd2000.

I was just wondering if there are any others which sound better than their cost? Ideally I wish to spend around £150 but am happy to buy s/h or online.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Sennheiser is the biggest waste of money. I brought a set recently and they have loads of interference. Save some cash and get anything mad by Phillips. They make the sound for b&o and sound cracking.

For light weight, AKG 701. Dead comfy, very very detailed. not the bassiest tho (open back).
For uber volume, try 181DJ's. Sealed, so less comfortable - but dead bassy, esp set to "large club". I used to use sennheiser HD25's till I got the 181's.

Thanks for the thoughts, was there any particular Phillips model that you recommend?

The AKG 181s sound interesting, I was put off the 701/2 because of the lack of a normal jack plug.

I had thought of the Grado SR80i, I read somewhere that the build quality of Grados was not great, anyone owned them?

Just bought some akg k242HD's, sounded the best to me out of AKG's range for rock.

I own a pair, they are fantastic. Fairly basic construction but definatly strong enough.

not particularly. I have a set of cordless that are 5 years old and they are still better than the new sennheiser cordless. Obviously the more you pay the better they get so pick the best your budget allows.

Have had some Grado SR60's for several years and despite feeling like they should be worth 50p when you remove them from the box, they sound fantastic.I had to replace the foam on mine eventually as it was starting to break down and was leaving black marks on my head/ears, but the rest of the construction has been fine. The foam on the 80's appears to be different anyway, so they may be better than my version in terms of wear and tear.

They do leak noise though, so don't buy them if annoying anyone else is going to be a problem!

Forgot to say, on ebay you can get a set of Grado Sr125i's brand new from the States, delivered, for around £110/£120.Not sure how much import duty you will get stung for though, but on a recent equaliser I had imported, it worked out to be around £25.That would still make them a damn fine pair of cans for the money!

Lots of food for thought re AKG and grado. Interesting that there is no love at all for sennheiser.

Thanks guys.

MEElectronics make good headphones for a very reasonable price! They get good reviews all over the net. I have a set of the M11's and they sound great; can be had for about £20 as well.

I tried a set of Bower and Wilkins in John Lewis just before Christmas and wish I hadn't. They're £300 and I was happy with my Sonys before that.

agree on everything said so far about the grado's. i have sr80's and i just wish i could find their portable equivalent!

as above, i tried some b&w p5's on yesterday and they sound great, look amazing and are by far the comfiest cans i've ever worn. i almost left my akg's in the shop in disgust! hehe

just need trip home for vat free shopping and i can justify getting them!

sennheiser sound great to those not used to decent headphones I think! Theres a lot of much better options out there.

Have a look at:

Audio Technica ATH-AD900
Beyerdynamic DT880/DT990
Alessandro MS-2 (Grado)

That's interesting, I tried some B&W headphones in Bentals in Kingston, They sounded good and if I recall cost just over 200. I kind of discounted them as I didn't know that B&W made headphones. Perhaps I should think again.
