I have a 2007 Thompson HD box which has gone dead. The red light is on, and flickers if a button on the box is pressed, but not if you point the remote.
Is this the dreaded HD box death?

Power supply would be my favorite, had exactly the same symptoms on my non HD Thomson Sky+ box.

Yes stuck in standby is normally psu,it may be worth unpluging they can sometimes just stick.Software download can sometimes kick some life into them, but be prepared for replacement box.

If you have any diy skills then you can get uprated supplies off ebay for about £20

or a second hand box off ebay/gumtree for @£50

or pay sky to send monkey out with refurb box for about £70 unless you can do the "are you going to fix it or am i going to virgin?" scam

Yep fixed mine myself, bought a kit of capacitors and soldered them in, never had a problem with it then.

Googled a bit more and took the box apart. SOme caps are bulging. Put back in and rang sky. They said to do a full reset, holding left and right buttons and powering up. Nothing.
Moaned and groaned and for £40, an engineer is coming with a new box Thursday. Credit for the missed week watching HD and 3 month warrantee after.
Could be worse!
If I get a choice, should I get a Pace box?

It will be a refurb

Depends what the engineer has on his van.

Pace are considered to be the best, but you may get an amstrad as these are the most common.
(sky own amstrad electronics) It will have a 3 month warranty so it should throw up any faults within this time.
