Morning all,

I have the opportunity to purchase one of the following for what seems like a very reasonalble price...

http://www.samsung.com/ie/consumer/pc-peripherals/...

I understand that it is a 'monitor' and therefore won't have a TV tuner but would it be viable to use as a 'TV' if it's being fed by SKY / DVD etc?

Cheers

Rob

Yup... My TV is a monitor/TV, and has no tuner, but all the connections under the sun on the back.

Are there any particular specs that I should look out for to ensure that this particular model is a good candidate to be used as a TV??

If someone could have a look at the specs (see above link) and tell me what to look out for it would be much appreciated.

ETA. It's this one...

If you want to connect to SKY HD and/or BluRay play you need an HDMI socket for each. The second screen is a specialist monitor without HDMI which appears to be an all in one Linux box.

Are they cheap in comparison to a TV? Are you trying to avoid a TV licence fee?

I'm looking at £250 very lightly (as in 4 days) used but if there's no way around the lack of HDMI issue then it's as good as useless really because it was specifically to replace my TV - so just for watching SKY / DVD etc!?

ETA. I'm not trying to avoid the license fee, I just wanted a cheap upgrade biggrin

Looks like the one in the second link does not have any video/audio ins as far as I can see? It is probably designed for digital sinage for use in commercial spaces, shopping centres etc.

The first one would make a great TV with the help of an AV amp.

Balls!! curse

Looking at the spec PDF on the Samsung site, it looks as though it actually does have a HDMI but I'll have to have a look next week to see for sure...

You could be right, I just downloaded the manual and it looks like it does have HDMI and Component inputs, so you should be good to go.

BTW these commercial displays cost ££££

I think this particular model is supposed to be the best part of £1k to buy new, so £250 would be a good deal if it does have the bits I need!?

Thanks for having a look for me.

ETA. One more question, sorry...

If it does only have a single HDMI input, is there still a way to have SKY and another external source hooked up to it??

Cheers

Yes - buy an HDMI splitter box from Maplin or some such. Cheap, work perfectly. The one I have automatically detects the most recent device to power on from a selection of 3 inputs, cost about 25 quid.

Thanks - I just had a look at those and they seem ideal...I can't remember the last time I watched a DVD anyway to be honest but I'd still rather not be changing leads if and when I want to...
