AV advice please - PS3 as primary AV source?

I'm thinking of changing my AV system as my current AV Amp (Denon AVR1509) doesn't have enough functionality.

So proposed system is:

Sources (already have)
- Sky+ HD
- Sony PS3 (for bluray, lovefilm streaming, media server)
- Denon DVD1710 ( SACD, DVD-Audio, DVD player)

AV Amp (to be bought)
- Denon AVR1912

Speakers (already have)
- Q Acoustics 2000 5.1 package

Outputs
- Panny 46" plasma (already have)
- Optoma projector (to be bought eventually)

So the main question is, is the PS3 good enough to be used as the primary AV source? Is the sound quality good enough? Will it support 3D bluray? Is usability OK as a DVD player?

Can't comment on the rest of your setup but the PS3 is a good blu-ray player, especially if you get the official sony remote, there are loads of features on it. I have my PS3 sound sent by optical cable and think it is great.

AFAIK a recent update enables the PS to play 3d blu-rays too.

Yes, the PS3 works well as a 3D Blu-Ray player. That’s what I bought mine for—with the added bonus of a few 3D games to enjoy as well.

I use a PS3 and yes, it runs 3D fine. I hadn't used my PS3 in ages so all it took was a quick software update and job done. I personally am pleased with the performance and all the reviews (by people who have something else to compare it against) seem to rate the PS3s BluRay performance quite well, so am pretty sure you'll be happy with it.

My only critique of your setup is that you wish to run two outputs from your Amp. I'm pretty sure the Denon only has one HDMI out, so you wouldn't be able to hook up your projector when you get it using HDMI if that's what you intended on doing.

Good point well made. Im thinking of just using an HDMI splitter for that - something like this http://ukhdmi.com/1-x-2-hdmi-splitter_QQ101778

Would that work or would the two different devices confuse it? I.e. Does one need to be powered off for the other to work?

like others have mentioned on here. I belive the PS3 has a very good reputation as a CD transport, so if for audio you are taking a digital (SPDIF or toslink) output to your amp or an offboard DAC then you should have a fine system.

I had a very quick look at the link and I couldn't see how the switching between output devices was handled, so to be honest, I don't know what would happen if you had both devices switched on but guess the Splitter itself somehow controls whether you'd output to the Plasma or Projector.

...Curiosity has just got the better of me so I did a quick search and found this:

I have no idea if it's any good at all as it literally was the first thing I found, but I did notice that this one can output to both outputs at the same time. I have no idea if that's of any use for you, but making bit of an assumption, i'd say the box itself will somehow manage things if you had both screens switched on and wouldn't get confused and it seems that some splitters will allow you to out put to both a plasma and a projector at the same time if that's functionality you'd like.
