Hello all, looking to replace the 7 year old 32" LCD tv (lg) in the lounge for either a 40" or 42" . Anyway, will be used for gaming (ps3 and xbox360) as well as general tv use , do what is best plasma or LCD? Oh, do not want to spend more than £500 either!!!

Richer sounds seem to have a good selection so that may be the place to buy?

We've just bought an LED tv because our LCD packed up. The picture seems a little crisper so you may want to consider LED tv's too.

There's a chap on PH's that sells sound and visual equipment so hopefully he'll be along shortly!

LED is LCD - its just the method of backlighting that's LED.

I was advised to go LCD for gaming - no idea why though, might be better handling of the inputs?

LG do some very nice 50" plasmas for around £500. I have a 60" LG and I often play battlefield 3 from about 3 feet away!

Crisp, detailed, good contrast, great colours, and importantly, no image retention. Go plasma!

Edit to add: I came from a Sony 42" LCD, and only went plasma because I couldn't afford a 60" LCD. Very glad I made the transition!

For gaming I would suggest a LCD (even if its LED backlit) because of potential risk of plasma burn-in, for long sessions. If you're able to stop every hour and refresh the screen for minutes then OK but that's a bit of a pain. We have plasma for movies and LCD LED for gaming.

Screen burn on plasma panels is virtually non-existent now. You'd have to be displaying a solid white object on a black background for days on end to get it.

Seriously, who the hell stops gaming once an hour to avoid screen burn on modern plasmas? They USED to suffer screen burn, but as this guy says...

...it's a non issue on modern plasma screens. I think people (like you) who are continuing pedalling scaremongering stories is NOT particularly useful.

Bought a Samsung 43" Plasma before Christmas and after some epic GT5/BF3 sessions I can confirm it is fantastic!

I've been told that screen burn is a non-existant problem in modern plasmas these days when I was buying it and I've certainly had no problems.

It's people like you who clearly do not have a clue what they're talking about are NOT very useful and the added rudeness doesn't help either, it just reveals the kind of character. I have seen 3 burnt Plasma over the past 6 months and one of them was even a Panny (the other LGs, less surprisingly), all of which are 2/3 year old max and as far as I know the panels have not evolved since then in terms of design. The only common theme, they were all used for intense gaming with some fixed light images that are simply NOT going away even after an hour of snow. It's nowhere near as bad it used to be of course but contrary to popular myths perpetuated by some people, the problem still hasn't disapeared. Please stop the BS. Thanks.

totally agree with you. I managed to burn an image on my panny plasma. Its only a couple of years old so it does still happen.

I now play my xbox on my lcd and have had no such issues.

why do threads always have to come down to people being abusive? screen burn still happens, stop being so angry.
