Firstly, I have a question regarding mains surges and spikes and my Meridian DSP5000s. I lost one last year due to a mains problem and am looking into protecting them. Would these be any use?
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
With the help of a guy from here, I installed a main surge/spike arrester in the consumer box, and wonder if this would be enough or to cover all bases and cover the speakers to.

Secondly, I have controling it a Meridian 568.2. To me, this seems like a computer to handle the prosessing with all amplification off board in the 5000s.
This in mind, would an APS smart UPS work with this or will it harm the box or sound? I have googled and it seems they are not suitable for amps, being designed for computer use.
I have a APC Smartups 700 spare.

Thanks

Hoover.

About 10 years ago I lost a musical fidelity amp (transformer totally disfiguerd, melted mess), and a pair of speakers (melted the poly prop cones) due to what we can only think was a mains surge..... ever since I have used BS marked surge potection strips (Belkin) and had no issues since.
Now using one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/6-way-mains-conditioner-pl... of this winter due to experiencing RFI from neighbours newly installed heating system rage can't comment on the surge protection but equipment is still alive, RFI still minor but nothing compared to previous (neighbours are getting their heating system checked soon as well, after I explained my problem to them).

Big strips are fine for the main system, but each speaker is in a different corner of the room, and the only thing on the socket. I don't really want a 4 or 6 way there.

Hi Jabb, how's it going?

If you're in any doubt about the surge protection on the main supply, a secondary device will be peace of mind (I have some fitted -TV, etc).

You can get the square type adapters with integral surge protection.

As for the ups, I think the load characteristics of an amp are what makes it unsuitable. Cheap ups units (like most of the smaller APC ones) are basically rubbish.

Good thanks.
The main reason I am looking is to second chance the main equipment. We have has a spate of power issues again recently and the processor keeps switching off at a hint of trouble and it has been giving a few errors. I can't afford to repair or replace at the moment. I just want belt and braces! I have gone off the UPS idea. ( I have 2 units doing nothing and could use them. )
Could you link to the kind of thing you have please?
Also, I would love to know what your thoughts are on replacement "better" mains cables, typically Russ Andrews woven

Finally, what do people think of these? http://cpc.farnell.com/1/1/34092-power-conditioner...
Are they a good or bad idea to run the Sky, Sony DVR, Meridian DVD and Processor through?

These are what I have:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/3-way-surge-adaptor-31304

WRT mains cables, other than ample conductor csa & good terminations/connections, I think the rest is 'snake oil'.

Unless you need to screen the power cable for emitted EMI (which is unlikely), I wouldn't bother.

The CPC thingy looks cool, but according to the mrs, falls into the now banned 'gadget' category.

I'd be interested in any improvement feedback. That said, I don't own any kit which would likely benefit.

Do you think the CPC thing would help, and not degrade any sound? It would sort out the cable maze and ease my concerns if it will make a difference.

Hi JABB ~ not sure what your budget is but Isotek http://www.isoteksystems.com/cgi-bin/product_categ... have a range to suit most pockets.

PS Audio have a good reputation but their latest range has jumped in price and are expensive now http://www.psaudio.com/products/power/pw-power-pla... . The model that the P5 and P10 replaced was called the Power Plant Premier, I think they're still available new for about £1500. Occasionally they come on the S/H market for about £1000 ~ loads of complementary reviews.
