Evening all, I'm after a new Centre speaker to go with my Yamaha home cinema setup. Currently running a Yamaha RVX367 and have some Mordaunt Short fronts with the standard yamaha surround and sub. Looking to upgrade gradually, so just after a new centre for the time being.

Budget is around £100, so nothing too fancy. Have been looking at the Mordaunt Short Alumni 5, and a few others in that price range, but wondering if anyone else has any suggestions?

Needs to be future proof for when I upgrade the Amp to a more powerful model (probably Pioneer).

Any help would be appreciated!

Second hand B&W CM centre?

The centre is the hardest working speaker really, so it's worth getting a decent one.

A mate bought one with a pushed in cone and got the replacement from B&W for absolute buttons. Though he didn't really notice any difference anyway. The damage puts people off, when it really doesn't matter.

I've always been of the opinion to match the centre speaker to the fronts, as they match in tone etc.. and the easist way is to get smae/similar model from the same manufacturer... I know some will disagree

Understand what you're saying, hence wanted to match the centre to the fronts. The fronts are only small bookshelf ones, but they sound great.

Checked out the B&W, would rather spend a bit more to get something in better condition, but you're right, if it's just the aesthetics it's easily repairable...might give that some thought!

Anyone got experience with Monitor or Celestion?

Amazing how many of these are advertised with damaged cones 'that don't affect the sound quality'. Obviously not audiophiles then.

I've been meaning to sell one of these for the past couple of years. Must get on with it sometime. They are good speakers, but you do need to get one to match the fronts. I've got B&W 603s and felt the CC6 wasn't a brilliant match for them.

But it did fit in the cabinet under the TV at the time.

Honestly, I challenge you to really notice the difference. I am a bit of an audiophile and couldn't comprehend how it didn't make a difference, but I heard them both and I'm blowed if I could tell and difference.

You have no choice but to get the Alumni 5.

You want the centre speaker to sound exactly the same as your sats, this means same tonal quality etc.
This is the only way to produce a proper 'sound stage' (to explain the sound should fill the room, and you shouldnt be able to tell what speaker its coming from)

Incidently I have the same setup with the MS Alumni 5. I am very happy with it. Very crisp very real & detailed.

Get it you wont regret it.
(also bare in mind speakers need a burn in period, it wont sound any good till about a month down the line)

Thank you, GhostDriver. I've found an Alumni for 70 at RicherSounds, so a bit of a bargain really. Think I might go have a listen first, before making a decision. Agree with the soundstage being consistent, however might end up changing both fronts and centre if I can find a good deal...

I'm running Monitor Audio silver 5is (floor standing) with silver 10i centre.... and I love them

The speakers are now probably 9 - 10 years old, used daily and sound superb ... with well built cabnets and look as good as when I got them out the boxes

with mission 77ds rears, with a Dali SWA12 sub and powered by a yamaha v765 with the pre-outs to roksan kandy amp (fronts as also used for my hifi set-up)
