As per the title really?

If I need to cancel my subscription. Can I continue to use my SKY+HD boxes to record the non-subscription stuff?

In effect an HD satellite PVR

Seeing as I now own the things, it would be a bummer having to purchase PVR's when I'd be trying to save money!

Nope, as soon as your subscription ends you lose access to all PVR stuff and anything you have recorded. It becomesije a normal sky box

Thanks, bit of a bummer isn't is? Bit cheeky really. Is it naughty/possible to circumvent this?

Indeed, you do own it so it seems a little 'off' that they can stop you using things like live pause and record. I'll never go back to having Sky, ditched it a couple of months back and haven't missed it in the slightest.

Iirc you can pay sky £10/month to retain the pvr service without any channels. Not cheap!

On a related topic, if you were to acquire a sky+ box and have a current sky subscription, can you just phone them up and get the box activated?

And using the HD box I just have the minimum account but thats still £20 a month but we very, very rarely watch anything on Sky.

Yes - just call them up to pair the card and your box.

The thing I found irritating though was that they didn't only list the channels you could ACTUALLY view - all the ones you'd lost from cancelling were still there, and it was a pain in the arse having to scroll through loads of dead channels.

I got rid of everything in the end, including the TV licence and haven't missed it in the slightest!

Agreed. I also get annoyed that the 'Anytime' system records everything including stuff that you cannot watch but I still prefer it.
