Anyone running a set up with an external USB HDD to record to?

Thinking of getting a 2TB one to use but reading the manual it's not clear if you can record one channel and watch another? I'd have thought it may have a dual tuner but reading the manual it suggests it puts a message up 2 mins before recording starts and you can choose to watch or not, but then kind of says you can change channel.

Anyone tried?

Yes I do this and you can only record the channel you are watching. If you set a recording for a different channel it will turn it over before it starts. Once recording you cant change channels. The only thing you can do is watch from another source like a dvd or games console.

In fairness it's not really cack, is it? Perhaps a little disappointing (that you purchased a tv without a second tuner) but stuff happens, no?

The design of the tv is a couple of years old and at the time the option of an external USB HDD recorder was fairly cutting edge and very rare. The tv itself is very highly regarded - so 99% of your viewing is of an exceptional standard.

You could always purchase an external HDD recorder with two tuners for similar money (on ebay).

None of those. If it's like the g20 it has it's own format which can't be read by another source.

That's correct - I read it as it is the basic mpeg stream from the tuner but digital-rights linked to your specific tv(not even one other of the same type). As an aside, I have my GT30 connected to a USB powered HDD and it's quite happy to record what I'm watching and also go in to record standby(red/orange flashing LED) but doesn't then record. I think you must need a powered HDD not a USB-powered on unless someone knows better silly

No chance. The hdd is not in a format recognised by pcs so it wont even pick it up.

Im well pissed off. Id already stripped out the old av stuff to make way for it too.
The box looked ok but the polystyrene packer on the left side was in bits, took the screen out of the box and noticed the cracks that originate in the left top corner, one going almost all the way to the bottom right corner.

All i can do now is send it back to amazon.

Typical though, i spend ages deciding exactly what telly to get and now iv got to wait longer while my living room contains a huge expensive box thats just sitting there, mocking me.

Its a conspiracy i tell ya!

That's a bit grim after getting all prepared for it. I must say, that was one of the main reasons I went to collect mine from the Sevenoaks store rather than some minimum wage bloke screeching about in a HDN van.

yikes

Makes my £170 for a 1.7GB drive years back look paltry.
