Hi, I'm looking to mount a 42" LCD tv to the ceiling of the bedroom. The ceiling is a normal plaster ceiling with wooden rafters. All the mounts on ebay (steel mounts around £50) will support the tv but the only one with a link to mounting instructions only has instructions to mount to a concrete ceiling.

Am I ok to hang it from wooden rafters? The tv is a Samsung and average weight for an LCD screen, certainly lighter than a CRT tv. Has anyone hung a similar size tv from their ceiling?

As long as it's screwed into the joists securely I can't imagine why not. I wouldn't trust it just into the plasterboard though so check carefully using a joist detector and check the fixings monthly.

If the telly's on the ceiling wouldn't it be a bit annoying if every time you wanted a sip of tea you had to get up to drink it?
I looked at doing this, but because of formentioned tea drinking I settled for the wall.

I've thought about this a few times, aimlessly, and I'd want bolts through the joist or to some struts running across more than one joist personally.

Interesting idea, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with a TV over my head biggrin

Erm, i was under the impression when he talked about a ceiling mount he meant still vertically, just attached above the TV rather than the usual behind the TV?

LOL come on, mirrored ceilings are sooo last year.

Flat screen would be a good idea but just make sure you don't skimp and use a tube or rear projector as it could get dangerous wink

If its a pole type mount then thee are loads of different bracket attachments you can get or just get up there and do some woodwork to make the bracket you have fit, if you actually want it on the ceiling like in the stupid philips advert then you are putting your TV at risk, all LCD TV's have heatsinks in them they are little bits of extruded aluminium designed to drag heat out of specific components, but they really loose efficiency if you mount the screen anything but vertically, the same goes for mounting them sideways too like they have in alot of TV programs when used as displays.

Just to bring this thread up from the dead Mark, I would like to fit an LCD screen horizontally on the ceiling above the my patients' heads.

Are you saying this is a no no with all screens?

Mmm, interesting, do you mean put a projector screen on the ceiling and project up to that?

Wouldn't the room have to be awfully dark though and where would the projector go?

I could be being dim but I don't get how you could project onto a ceiling without having a projector kicking around the middle of the room?

I have found an LCD solution: Vogel's Sky Mount.

You do not have to place the projector exactly at the centre of the room . The image can be adjusted

Well it's not a bad I suppose (sounds like you've tried it!) and thanks for the suggestion anyway smile

However, I think this would be a tidier solution:

(With the chair in the flat position obviously)

Last time I was at the dentists (at a rather nice surgery I must admit), the screen was mounted just beyond my feet and mounted at an angle...I never was totally flat on my back

Aah my fault, more in response to the OP. I guess a dentist room will be a tad too bright.
