outdoor speakers for the garden
Discussion
as a tag on to my thread in the homes & diy section http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... i'm looking for some outdoor type speakers. nothing too fancy (read expensive!) but nothing that sounds like a cheap ipod dock either.
the idea is to mount them under the eaves of the shed so they're sheltered from most of the rain but i guess they still need a little bit of shower proofing.
do you have to take these things down at the end of summer to protect them from the frost or anything?
i've had a brief look on the bay & amazon but nothing really jumps out at me?
any ideas chaps?
edited to add, these are the only things i've really seen but i've no idea of the performance?

This place appears to have a range of outdoor speakers - may be worth talking to them for advice? AE speakers have a pretty good reputation, as do Boston Accoustics.
A few years ago, I wanted some decent sounds on the patio and ended up going for B&W outdoor speakers (WM6 I believe). These are a bit expensive, but at the time talking to various suppliers the one thing they tended to agree on was that it's actually quite dificult to get decent sound outdoors. Main reason is that in a room, the sound bounces off ceiling, walls and floor so for a given sound level and quality requires less power than outdoors where the sound simply dissipates.
In terms of protection, I guess it depends on the specific speaker and location. I installed ours around 5 years ago on the rear wall of the house. Although you apparently don't need to, when not in use I do put a cover on them (standard plastic rubble sack with opening facing down so as not to collect water). They've been out there all year round ever since and never miss a beat. They sound great for BBQs etc. Not quite as good as the indoor hifi (decent separates system), but much better than most "consumer" stereo systems.
Obviously as well as speakers you're going to need a source and amplifier....
